Question Books of interest perhaps

Has anyone read any of these? I would be interested in finding out if they are worth getting.

The Awakening: A Tale of Avian Evolution
Mark Jones. 2000. 536 pp. No illustrations. Hardcover. This is a powerful tale of struggle, hope, and ultimately triumph. The two main characters, Yellow Streak and Angel, are parrots that lived millions of years apart, but are linked by bonds stronger than the advance of time. Yellow Streak is born to a primitive parrot species and witnesses the demise of dinosaurs. Her gifted intellect and unique abilities help her flock to survive to become the genetic roots of all modern parrot species. Angel, a Moluccan Cockatoo, is born into an equally frightening and unpredictable world populated by humans. She brings two people together with her companionship and love.

The Great Petrowski-A Fable
Gina Berriault. 2000. 78 pp. Black/white and color drawings. An ecological fable about a lonely parrot, lost in a nameless rainy city, homesick for a place he can't quite remember. Blessed with a dazzling singing voice, quickly skyrockets from obscurity to international renown. As a magnificent opera star he finds true love and uses his gift of fame to save not only his native rain forest but all creatures of the earth.

The Loop (A New York Times Notable Book)
Joe Coomer. 1992. 201 pp. Paperback. Lyman, a thirty-year-old orphan, is sipping coffee on the front steps of the trailer he calls home one morning, when a ninety-year-old parrot arrives with a beakful of cryptic sayings-such as "That which hath wings shall tell the matter"-and a mysterious past. Convinced that heeding the bird's wisdom will lead him to answers about himself, he so desperately seeks, Lyman combines his night job as a courtesy patrolman, circling the highway that loops around Fort Worth, with days in the library. Together with Fiona, the loquacious librarian, he traces his adopted pet's origins, and while what Lyman ultimately discovers may not help him piece together his own past, it paves the way for a future he never imagined.

"The Loop" sounds good!

One of my favourites is a book by Joanna Burger "The Parrot Who Owns Me"

If I'm not sure about a book..... I borrow it from the local Library to check it out before buying.

Graehstone,

Thanks for the recommendation!

I just finished reading "The Loop" last night. It was a good novel. It left me feeling a bit sad although it has the classic happy ending.
If you're looking for a Bird book; one with information about caring/living with birds then it's not good.
I enjoyed the philosophical component - this is really the meat of the story IMO.

This story touched my heart also because both of my children are adopted (not orphans) and I've often wondered what they think about their history. I hope they're a little better off than Lyman (the main character of the book)!!!

Thanks again,
Barb

PS: I'm Librarian for our local Bird Club so I'll be adding this to our collection :)

Wow, I am intrigued by "The Loop". I'll have to search eBay or Amazon for it.

Also check out "Parrot Culture: Our 2500-Year-Long Fascination With the World's Most Talkative Bird" guys. It's fascinating as well.
