New addition to family, possibly

I called on a 10 yo umbrella today. His family travels back and forth to Alaska every other month, and have decided that it is taking its toll on the bird. They are asking $400.00 to recoup some of the cost of his cage, and want nothing for the bird; just a good home. I go to meet him tomorrow night and see if he likes me.......................I realize he isn't the "baby" that I wanted, but he needs a home and I am willing to give him one.
Wish me luck........

Thanks - I need some advice also............they have a sun conure that they are selling for $150.00, or are willing to give me a package deal for both of them. Anyone with experience with the conures, are they loud, do they get big, do they talk? Thanks

Suns and Jendays usually tend to be the loudest of the conures, but they can be tought to be quiet. If the sun conure is friendly, then you would love him! Otherwise, if he is not friendly, then you might not be interested. Conures are medium/small sized birds and only patagonian conures (or maybe some of the other large conures) can get just a bit larger than mini macaws, to give ya an idea. Suns are some of the smaller species of the large conures.

Keep us posted!

Frankly, you have chosen two of the noisiest birds you could possibly think of.I love toos but I never recommend them. They are also a health hazzard for your macaw. Don't forget the respiratory disease implications. You will need more than just an air cleaner. That just won't handle the too dust adequately unless you're thinking commmercial cleaner. Do what your feel is best for your family. If its a true love connection and you can't live without it, by all means bring it home.

I know you are a macaw lover Nancy! I love my b&g and wouldn't trade him for the world, however, cockatoos are my true love. The point you brought up about the dust is a concern and something I will have to address. Thanks!

Hey E.B..........IMO, Sun Conures are one of the most curious and playful of all birds to keep and of course beautiful too BUT I personally would not have another in my home for too long as for me they are just too loud & their calls irritating TO ME. However if ya get a good enough price, I say take it and if too noisey for you then find it a good home with someone who doesn't mind. I have found they are easy to relocate because of color & playfullness but I try not to sell them to apt. or town-house dwellers as almost always they will have to go sooner or later.

If cage is nice & incl. then that is a fantastic price if the bird is also finger tame. If not finger tame then it is still a good price if healthy and in good feather with no missing parts I would not pass it up as I am a sucker for a deal. Just be ready to do the right thing & invest whatever time is necessary to find it a permanent home with someone else IF YOU are not entirely happy with it later on.....I think the bird will be awful lucky to be able to call you MAMMA and btw I have heard they can talk but never actually heard one talk myself & I have had many & have seen many in other people's homes.

If the 2 birds are friends & buddies now then IMO ya almost have to take both so as to make the transition for both a smoother one as they are probably used to being ariund each other & that gives them a sense of added security.....Good luck..

Wow Joel - you and I are on the same wave-length. I have decided to go ahead and get both and find a home for the conure if need be. Of course hubby isn't real happy, but it will work out - it always does! He was the one climbing in the trees for Elwoodblue last weekend. Oh - "buckwheat" (the umbrella) has never been trimmed - guess that will change real quick!
Anyways, thanks all for your words of encouragement and advice. I will let you know what happens after tomorrow night.

Great decision IMO as I already suggested for the reasons I suggested and great luck for those two birds also. 8) ..... I do however agree totally with Nancy about the dander/dust/noise problem and don't recommend Cockatoos to anyone for that reason. I think you are smart enough to realize all that and will work out a solution for the welfare of both your family & the birds which may include an outdoor aviary maybe attached to a window where you can view them and they can view your family. You could open the window from inside to allow entry to interact with them part of each day and put them back afterwards to eliminate the feather dust problem for the most part plus that way they can get their needed sunshine, humidity, rain showers and be mentally occupied/stimulated by all the things going on around them outside. I do recommend a solid roof for them (metal is best with over-hang IMO & IME), a double wire bottom to protect feet & toes from predators and solid sides to keep wind and driving rain off them and their food......Ya just have to invite me to drop by to see them next time I'm in your area.....Btw, I like pizza and Margueritas besides Oriental Buffets. :)

Got to run and do some editing now, saw a couple of mis-spelled words in my recent post.
