I got mine at Bird Paradise. It was $9.99 for a small bottle and is known as "Dende oil". Its a semi solid oil in the bottle similar to bacon grease coming to room temp and turning solid white. But the rpo is orange. It instructs to heat the whole bottle to turn it liquid and make it easier to get out. I use the tip of a nut shell fork. It looks like a crochet needle type thing. As soon as I hold it over the warm food it goes liquid. So no needto heat the whole bottle. It goes a long way so the small bottle is good unless you have a lot of fids.

Re the Hy's Phyliis, I read that they need higher saturated fats than most birds. RPO is one of them as well as macadamia nuts, walnuts, and pecans. The preen gland depends on it and the rpo is THE best source of Vit A. hands down.

Everything I have stated is from research and trial. So I feel comfortable and confident giving out this advice!

thanks so much.
I'd ask Mike B. for suggestions. I feed my "normal" macaws each .5 cc 1x/week as a maintenence thing. None of mine pluck or overpreen, so they don't need the doses for birds that do that.

My baby Hy was getting it in his formula for awhile, but it was too rich for him, so it's stopped for now. When he's weaned, he'll get it weekly like the others do. He may need more (and if Mike could tell me HOW much more, I'd appreciate it!), as Hyacinths need a higher saturated fat/lower protein diet than other macaws.

I've read here and there that other macaw species can be prone to vitamin A toxicity if they get too much. I can't remember where, so unfortunately I can't point you to the source. So if that's true, I'm guessing that too much of a good thing might be as bad as too little, and you'd want to make sure your bird gets the proper amount for his own needs.

Thanks for the relies! It seems like everybody loves RPO! now, how much should I give and how often? I would also like to contienuse giving coconut oil, and from what I have read (thank you Monica for your very helpful links) about 1/4-1/2 tesp. But how often? Another quick question: since I want to keep giving the coconut oil and RPO, do what size portions do I need to feed of each, and once again, how often?

When buying RPO you have to make sure it is pure. Some companies cut it w/ kernal oil. You don't want that. You want a bright reddish color. On dosing the RPO. .5 ml is what my Vet recommended. I don't get near that now. I just put a lil squirt in thier seed mix. I know it's not scientific, but when adding it to bowls for 7-Macaws, and 1 Conure I don't have the time to sit, and measure. When our Lucky first arrived I mixed 1/4 teaspoon to 1 lb of seed mix.

This was written by my Vet DR. Bankstahl.

On feeding baby Mikey. Was he getting it every day? I was giving the baby Scarlets .1 per 100 grs of body weight once a week. When it got to .5 I stopped it there. I give the babies .5 once a week. I was just giving it to them in a syringe separate from the formula.

Vit A is a fat soluble vitamin. Yes, it can be to much of a good thing. Based on talks w/ my Vet. FOR MACAWS .5 is in the safe zone. For smaller birds go less.

From what I've seen occur in my flock RPO is the missing link to avian nutrition. My B&G was totally to down on his chest. He is almost fully feathered now. My birds get a veggie mix every day along w/ seeds, and nuts. It has also effected thier personality I believe. They are much calmer also.

Mike

I would assume the BP stuff is great. You feeding seed for pellets? Like I said earlier. I just put a lil squirt in thier seed, and mix well to make sure everything is coated. It's not miost, more oily than moist. I would say gradually introduce it.

seed for pellets? I dont understand ( sorry )
the birds are getting Pantagonian Nuts with and without shells. Goldenfeast nuts, meats & fruits. ALOT of fresh vegies & fruits. They munch on peanuts & chili peppers. I was trying sunflower seeds but they didnt eat them , they thru them at each other. they eat alot of sweet potato, pasta rice & veggies for dinner.
I have tried the Zupreem pellets, they dont eat them, they grind them and i see alot at the bottom of their cage. Is there something else I should be adding, would I add the RPO then to their morning mix of nuts and fruits & eggs?

** Mike you are a lifesaver, as well as the others, for months now you all answer my questions so quickly .. TYSVM * *
