Just Pita...9 month old Sun Conure.

I have had finches years ago, but they just really want to be fed and left alone....so my bird experience was very limited. In fact I never thought about owning, excuse me, being owned by a bird. I got a job at Petco, and found the Parakeets really kind of cute. Then we got my little Pita in. I remember the day. The manager took the crate in the office, shut the door, and sat with him a bit. He was like 2 months old. Then she walked out with him nestled in a towel. I went back with her when she fed him, and I remember being amazed at how cute this little bird was. Eventually she showed me how to feed him, and the first time was magic. He was so cute, and so hungry that he climbed up my shirt while I was preparing his formula. From then on we were buddy's. We bonded really quickly. I would walk around the store with him on my shoulder, he'd give me kisses, and cuddles. Everyone at work started telling me I should get him, because he choose me. I did my research, and learned alot about Parrots. But I don't think you are ever really prepared....lol I finally decided to get him, and after work one night, I brought him home. And here we are today......I am blissfully (sometimes) owned by my little feathered child.

I first decided I wanted a bird while working at PSP. I fell head-over-heels for a U2 we had there. (Almost lost my job when he bit through the phone cord at my register lol) Unfortunately at the time I didn't have the money to take Sabrina (ya...after being named that we found out it was most likely a boy) home with me. He was at our store for over 6 months and was becoming attached to certain employees...that's when they decided to relocate him. That was in 1999. I changed jobs shortly after.

In 2003 I had an opportunity to adopt another U2. I thought she was wonderful, but it had been so long since I had worked with a parrot that she was a bit intimidating. I also did some additional research on U2's and realised that it was NOT for a first-time bird owner. I declined on adopting Annie and started doing mroe research on what type would fit into my life.

Alas, I found The Land of Vos website and that was pretty much it. LOL I was just taken by them! i began my search for a breeder. I did not want to buy from a store because I know how over-priced they are and how little the people actually know about them. I also didn't want to purchase from someone who sells unweaned babies....or ships unaccompanied. Yes, I had a list. LOL I found Blue Moon Aviaries and got in contact with Michelle.

She delivered my Gypsy to my door. It was a bit trying in the begining. If I could do it over I would've started with something a little smaller. There was some definate trial and error!

In 04 I got the notion that Gypsy was lonely during the day. So I began my search for a male Vos. I did speak with a few people about adoptions but nothing worked out. I still wonder about the one little boy I wanted to bring home...the owner wouldn't take him for a vet check, and I refused to bring an un-checked fid into my home since quarantine was pretty much out of the question. *sigh*

Somehow I was led to Harvey a patagonian conure. I actually saw his ad on this site. Never heard of a Patagonian before. Wasn't sure about how loud a conure could be. But I read patty's are the quietest of the conures....foolish me...conure and quiet do NOT belong in the same sentence!! I drove the 3+ hours to pick him up and another 3+ hours to bring him home--on New Years Eve of 04. He's been my little velcro baby ever since. Also the reason I will need a hearing aid before I'm 40. LOL

I have too many birds to go deep into how they got here and why, but I can give an abbreviated version :-).

Bob, BG; Petey McSweet, Sun conure; Arthur, GW; were all purchased from a local bird store. Bob and Arthur were babies, and Petey was an adult.

Eddie, a Severe, was given to us by someone whose other birds despised him, and vice versa. He was and continues to be a cranky old man :-).

Ceilidh and Mikey were purchased from breeders. Ceilidh is my Scarlet macaw baby, and Mikey is my Hyacinth macaw.

I got both of my mini macaws at bird shows. Bacio was the last Hahns macaw left, and Bella was one of three Illigers. I am currently in the process of adding my sponsored yellow-collared to my flock, so I'll keep you posted!

Right now, Harley is my only bird, so here is her story:

My father found Harley at a bird fair in 2005. She came right up to the bars of the cage to be petted by everyone, and he loved her! My mom wasn't too thrilled at the idea of bringing home a large bird, but she fell in love too! I immediatly loved her. She was SO cute. Although she wasn't an eclectus (which is what I wanted) I really liked her. So, in January of '06, she came to our house. Then I learned that she was indeed loud, messy, and chewed... I soon began to think, oh boy, this is not what I wanted. Harley still had to be handfed, and slowly, I learned to love her, and gained her trust.
It has been fun ever since!

First off...I LOVE everyone's stories!

Our little Indian Ringneck, Willis we saw in our local pet store. My husband loved him right off but we weren't looking for a bird at the time. We used to have a Quaker,"Little Ed", once upon a time and he died in a tragic "hide and seek" accident with our then eight year old son, on Thanksgiving day no less. We were all so heartbroken and didn't want another bird until ALL the kids were grown. That was seven years ago. But this little ringneck kept coming up to the front of the cage and interacting with my husband. We soon left and the next day I went back and bought Willis as a surprise for my hubby, even though he "Hates birds". Or so he'd like everyone to believe.

Tully is our six year old TAG that we adopted this last October. I have always wanted a TAG and since my husband got HIS bird I thought it only fair to get one for me. I'm a stay at home mom and my youngest is off to kindergarten next Fall so I thought the time was right for a TAG baby. I would finally have the time to give it all the attention that it needed since my baby was about to fly the coop so to speak. So I found an AWESOME breeder here in Washington state and we really hit it off. She only had a clutch a year so I thought 'great'. I'll get a baby in the Fall. Well a month or so after meeting her she found out that one of her babies was in a rescue in Seattle, he had been abused by the previous owner. So she e-mailed me and asked if we'd be willing to take an older bird. Her first priority is always the babies that are already out there. So we said that we'd be willing to TRY him out. All we knew about him was that he was a little crabby and he was a plucker and a biter. I wasn't too thrilled with the thought of being stuck with a butthole of a bird for the next 50 years so I wasn't committing to anything. My whole thought was, if I'm going to live with a guy that's a jerk for the next 50 years, he'd better be bringing home a paycheck. Period. We would just see what happened with Tully. Well, I fell in love. It took him a bit to come out of his shell and he has some major issues with men, but he's slowly coming around and I can't imagine life without him now. He is home to stay! Some things I think are just meant to be.

My first bird is Angel-cockatiel, got her from a lady at the flea market...she is very sweet but she choose my daughter instead of me.

Bandit-GCC and Frankie-Black capped conure, I feel in love with this gcc at a pet store but they wanted a small fortune for him, so I came home and read everything I could find on these birds, found a breeder and drove 5 hours to get Bandit, once there the black cap found my shoulder, cuddled under my hair and would not leave me, so we decided to bring them both home. They are now considered my gangsters!

Next I wanted to add to the family with a grey. Done my research, read everything I possibly could about them and then my long search began, finally found a baby, a TAG--Chelsea so we drove 8 hrs to pick her up.
She is now 16 months old and the most precious, cuddly bird I have. Love at first sight!!

My newest bird-Panama-is a Blue front Amazon--9 months old, not sure of sex yet but watched her/him grow for the past 6 months. Every week I would go into the local petstore to visit and talk to her, I wanted her to come home but knew I needed to wait. My husband went with me this past Sat. to see her and we brought her home with us. She is a little hand shy but I know with patience and love she will come around. I sat by her cage and talk, give her treats and try ever so hard to be patient and not rush her.
