What fids do you have, and what are their stories?

I know we've had many threads like this, but I was inspired by Lisa B's grey thread.

So I propose that every member makes a list of their fids, along with the story of how you got them.

I'll start.

The Fids

1. Arelynn Kaida (Aree) - 1 yo. - F - Brown Head Poicephalus
2. Teagan Indiana (Indy) - 10 mo. - M - Meyers Poicephalus
3. Freddie - 13 yo. - M - Congo African Grey
4. Divot - 1 yo. - Pacific Parrotlet

How I got them

Aree:

Aree was my first bird. She came to me at a difficult time in my life, and at my peak of interest in birds. I researched for two years about the different types of parrots, searching for the perfect parrot. Finally I came across poicephalus. Originally I was set on the meyers, and when I found a canadian poi breeder I was ecstatic. Unfortunatly, she had none at the moment. I was heartbroken.

She told me about the two brown head babies she had avaliable. I researched, and soon learned that a brown head sounded just perfect. The second baby had already sold, but that was fine by me. I was told about Aree's moody, yet loveable personality, and her knack for getting into trouble.

and the rest is history.

Indy:

I love to browze our local Petland. When I saw their two new meyers, it was love. I'd had my eyes on meyers for quite some time, as stated in Aree's story. I saw the price ($475) and immediatly called my parents. After a few days, they agreed and called the store to ask to buy them. The man at the store said he would have to wait to check with his manager.

The next day we went to visit, and saw that the price had spiked to $900! After a long argument, we took little Indy (at the time Ames, as named by my dad) home, with a cage and all accesories for $800.

Freddie:

Freddie's story can be found in Lisa B's thread for African Grey stories.

Divot:

My little sister owned two degus (pretty much large gerbils) but wanted a bird. My step mom convinced her that if she rehomed her rodents that she could get a bird. After prolonged hesitation, she agreed.

Eventually, my step mom and I responded to an online ad for a $100 parrotlet with a free cage. We went to see little Divot, and fell in love. Actually, I don't really see what we fell in love with, because Dee-vo is a little demon in feathers. But she was obviously mistreated, and our hearts had room for one more.

We came home, and suprised Cassie with her own little bird. She still misses her degus, but they went to a REALLY good home. Cassie is in love with her little bundle of amazon-type crazyness.

Noel - approx 16 going on 17 - sex n/a believed female - cherry head conure
Story - http://birdboard.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9799
2006 Revision - http://birdboard.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33667

Charlie - 12 going on 13 - sex n/a believed male - mitred conure
Story - As I know it, his parents were a wild caught pair, and while owned by one particular breeder (now into dog rescue) only bred once. He was one of the chicks, and was probably bought by a man who had him for about 10 years (as we only know that he had one owner). There came a point in time where he just became too much, too noisy, and the owner wanted to move on... so he boarded Charlie at a pet supply store indeffinitely, where-in he supervised the bunnies and guinea pigs in the back (cause he hates dogs). Another member here saw him, and offered to foster him... took a couple months for things to become set into place, but she was finally able to foster him. They tried working with him, however he was just one NASTY little guy! That was, until he snuck over to the owners blind ruby macaw, attacked her, and in return had half of his lower beak bitten off... With the help of two good avian vets, and a lot of care at home, he was restored back to health, minus part of his beak and his ability to really bite down... where-in he finally started calming down, getting cuddly with his chosen person, and really coming around. It came to a point where-in the owner wanted to place Charlie with someone else who had experience with conures, even more so with another cherry head. I've always wanted to get another cherry head, or if it was a must, a mitred, for both Noel (hopefully) and me, someday... so it was something I just couldn't resist! I knew Charlie was gonna be a big cherry head though via a weight from vets office.... but when I actually traveled down to learn how to care for him and pick him up, my first thoughts were "WOW is he big!" and "That's no cherry head!!!!" It's taken a bit for him to adjust since this past October, but he's become really close to me, and he's the 'parrot that I've always wanted', so to speak!

Casey - bout 5 1/2 years old - female - cockatiel
Story - Casey was a gift of sorts... At the time, I only had budgies... at the time, my mother was also taking a computer course, and had study nights with a couple of friends at one of their houses. The owners of the house new how much I loved birds, and new of a couple who bred and handraised cockatiels from day one (of hatching). The wife (of the household my mother studied at) talked with the breeders, said how much I loved birds, and was able to buy Casey at a discount (they were running out of room). Casey was really a momma baby, and they new she was a female... I was expected to be at one of their studies (as I'd often go-however my sis was there), however had a science project I was doing at home. When my mother and sis came home, my sister had a 'pet taxi', so of course I got distracted and wanted to know WHAT was in there... It was Casey no doubt! And apparently everyone enjoyed her personality and willingness to go to anyone for scritches (not so anymore though, since not many people I know around here are interested in birds). Found out though, that somehow, indirectly, that I bought her...

Pistachio & Kiwi - 8+ years - male and female - cockatiels

Georgia & Sophia - approx 2 years - girls - budgies
Story - The%20Fids/Budgies%20N%20Bourkes

Bourkes - 5 & 10+ - sisters - bourke parakeets
The bourkes came to me from an older couple who were going to travel around the USA and could not take them nor find a babysitter. At the time, there were 3 bourkes, a pair and what I'm guessing to be one of their youngest offspring at the time, and a female turquoisine. The turq and parent bourkes were about 11 years old when I got them, and the baby bourke about 5-7, possibly. The turq suffered from depression, and plucking/mutilating of feathers for around 5 years, due to loss of a mate, and no toys to play with. She didn't last long after I recieved her as I believe she died from malnutrition, stress, and depression. I wish I could have done more for her, though it might have been better for her to pass on instead of suffering for all the years that she has, and she was getting old in age, to add. Though with the bourkes, the pair bred once (succesfully - had two clutches), produced a clutch and had two wonderfully beautiful babies. As time went on, I lost the father at 13 (he stopped eating, got him eating again, then he quit again, and couldn't get him back), then lost the mother at 14 when her upper beak was bitten off, it was the weekend, and I wasn't able to even locate an avian vet back then (found one later on however). For a time, the remaining three bourkes were kept with two male budgies... What started out as 'harmless feeding' from one of the budgies to one of the bourkes became a serious issue, and before I realized it, I lost the male (brother chick) and was loosing one of the females... I feel pretty stupid for not seeing the problem sooner, and have since spent over $200 on the bourkes, with nothing helping in the long run.

The Fids:

Kona-Congo African Grey:10 Months old
Fiji-Green Cheek Conure: About a year and a half
Paula & Mario- English Budgies: 1 Year and 2 Years old

Story:

Fiji, was looking for my first bird in a while. I had had birds but didnt know much about them, I finally started getting into birds and did tons of research. I went into my local bird store and there were 4 green cheeks, Fiji picked me, and shes an awesome bird couldnt have chose a better one.

Kona, a friend of mine, who works at the local bird store knew that I have always wanted an african grey. She told me she had one she wanted me to meet. I didnt think anything of it then. She had no toes and I met her and fell in love. The day I met her I went home and decided she had to come home with me, the next day took my mom to meet her and then the following day the deposit was placed. She has turned into an amazing compainion.

The budgies: I had had budgies in the past and wanted them again, but this time it would be right, BIG CAGE, lots of toys, good diet. Since I knew more about them I wanted to get a couple and give them a good life, they are very much into themselves but will come out of the cage occasionally.

I went to a flea market and there was a bird store. When I went in I saw Booger in a cage full of baby budgies. He was jabbering away in budgie talk.Everytime I went around the store and looked at all the different kinds of birds he was the one I came back to.He is blue with a yellow face and he still jabbers all day but now he whistles and talks to LOL

On my birthday my brother asked me what I wanted and I said another bird but not a budgie.I went back to the same place and got Buddy because he was jabbering away and looked so cute also even though handfed he kept running away from everyone like he was not interested. All the other cockatiels were very tame and I did hold a few but Buddy was the most interesting as the whole time he would run away a little bit then start his tiel talk to himself it was to cute so he came home with me. He is tame now and flys to me frequently for head scritches and he whistles and talks and makes kissy sounds.

Long story short: In August of 2006 my boyfriend and I went up to Indiana to my mom's condo, we carried our lutino Indian Ringneck, Baby, on the plane. My mom has a husky. 15 minutes before we were to leave for the airport to come back home, my boyfriend accidentially left the door open while Baby was out on his play stand in our room and the dog got in and got our precious Baby
We were a week with out a fid and we couldn't take it anymore. We went the the Aviary and adopted Jazzy when she was 3 months old. It's sure been a crazy adventure since then!!

Doyle- Nanday Conure
Danny- Mitred Conure
Princess- Cockatiel

Doyle-
We really wanted a bird but we unsure about what type. I read an article in Bird Talk about Conures and we went to look at some. We fell in love with Doyle and the rest is history.

Danny & Princess-
I was looking at Craigslist for birds and bird stuff and came across a guy that was trying to give Danny away free to anyone that bought his jeep. I posted about the story here and was encouraged to write an email and so I did. I never got a response. It seemed like everyday this guy changed what he wanted to trade Danny for, finally he wanted a laptop and we had one. We called him and told him we would trade and he offered Miss Princess too. We picked them up about 3 hours later. Princess has really come around but Danny is a work in progress.

Jerry:

Dave and I were at the petstore one afternoon looking at fish and we ended up standing in front of the small bird cages and we literally pondered, "What if we got a bird...." We even said, "How hard could it be having a bird?" We looked at cages and I knew that if I didn't put my foot down that we would have walked out of the store with a bird without having a clue about them! We both agreed that the budgies were small and adorable. I convinced my hubby to go home and we would research them before knowing what we were getting into.

I researched birds and budgies for about a week - and joined this board We first looked in the classifieds of the local newspaper and there was an ad about a "friendly yellow and green budgie" needing a home. I called the woman and we agreed to meet the bird on the weekend.

The weekend rolled around and Dave and I arrived at the woman's place at our agreed time and knocked on her door and got no answer. Her car was there, there was a dog barking, we could hear the bird chirping. I called her and got the answering machine and left a message stating that we were outside.

After waiting for 10 minutes or so we were a bit peeved so we left and went to Petco. As we were picking out a cage and supplies she called and said she was sleeping - although with all of the racket going on in her house I don't know how that could be. The whole situation seemed fishy so we never followed up again.

So we picked out a cute little blue budgie from Petco and we couldn't be happier. We have grown with him and he's the love of my life, I couldn't love him anymore if I tried.

Lulu:

A few months after we got Jerry we were still enamored with birds - still are Dave started making comments that he wanted a cockatiel. I was never interested in cockatiels (always thought they looked kinda funny ). He had been visiting a pet store after work and handling their cockatiels (for about a week before he told me about this ).

I agreed to at least go in and look at the tiels with him cause he wouldn't stop talking about them. So one evening we went to the pet store and Lulu stepped right up for him and did NOT want to leave him It was love at first sight for them both and I couldn't deny that. I held her and also couldn't deny what a sweetie she was - I was amazed at how tame she was since I had spent a grueling couple of months taming Jerry myself and I was not used to a tame bird!

So Lulu came home with us that night And she's been our little princess ever since - and sometimes I call her my little pigeon She's a doll and I love her to death.

Ours are listed in my signature. Most came to us due to thier family having changes or simply that life changed and they could no longer care for them. Each one has a slightly different story.

Casper is our newest one, and last one. He is 15 and his person had problems with her family and Casper not liking them at all. He is a total goofball as well.
