New Goffin owner

Hi,
I will be picking up my 6 month old Goffins Cockatoo tomorrow, I am so excited YIPPIE!!!! I have been wanting one for about 30 years now and it is finally happening. I wanted to ask everyone for advise about these birds, don't get me wrong I have done my homework about them, but as everyone knows, you can't always believe everything you hear, plus there is usually alot more that you don't hear. So if anyone has some good advise about the homecoming and from that point on, please advise.

Thank you sooooo much

I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED

Congraulations on your new "baby"! I've had my Goffins for 18 years, since he was three months old. It's good that you are getting yours a little older. Is he weaned yet? The first thing I would say, is to never force weaning. It can make them very insecure.

Goffins are high energy birds and need lots to do. Mine is good at all things mechanical. He also learned a number of tricks. Trick training is a great way to bond. Look for natural behaviors that you can turn into something that would be fun to do on command.

I had always wanted a cockatoo as well, and got the Goffins on the basis of smaller size and being "not very loud". Boy was THATwrong! Casey might not be as loud as a Mollucan, but he can still make life miserable when he decides to go into a screaming tantrum. If you have done your homework, then you know that yelling back only increases the bird's yelling, as well as eroding his trust.

I'm hopeful that many others will reply to you, with other points I left out.
Enjoy your new birdie!

Yes she is weaned. I am just like you, I had always wanted an umbrella cockatoo, but I decided to go with the goffin for same reason you did, size. I am just like an expectant mother today, doing alot of nesting lol I have so many tickles in my belly its driving me nuts :) Thanks for your reply and I will post more and some pics when I get her home

Thanks to you all who have welcomed my Rosie girl. I brought her home Friday and I am amazed at how quickly she adjusted. I was expecting her to be nervous, at least for a couple days, but by Saturday morning she was playing, eating, wanting to come to me etc... I bought her a shower perch yesterday (Sunday) and I gave her a shower and she just loved it! I have taken some pictures of her that I would like to share, but I haven't figured out how to get them on the Bird Board site yet. I know it can't be "that" hard LOL So as soon as I do I will post them.
