the drop in bird owners probably was due to the bird flu scare. i read a news article about UK's bird rescues having a terrible time keeping up with the increase in birds that were being given up by their owners because of the bird flu.

Bird flu, newcastles disease, among others..... especially was bad in California a couple years back... birds being killed for no reason, had no say so over their life, etc...

Some more stats.

2005 Pet Indiustry Spending was 36.3 Billion Dollars more than twice the amount spent in 1994 with an expected growth to 38.4 Billion in 2006.

Food costs took the bulk with over 15.2 billion, verterniary costs a close second with 9.4 billion.
