Exclamation Advise On Fighting

Romeo And Juliet Are My 3 Year Old Peach Faced Love Birds.

I Need Urgent Advise As Julie Layed Eggs And Ignored Romie While Nesting Which Was Fine But After Several Weeks She Has Attaked Romie And He Is In A Bad Way. Torn Claw/sore Wing And Pecked Eye.

He Has Been To Vet And In New Cage And Has Medication Etc And Will Be Ok But What Now?

Julie Is Now Alone In Original Cage In Sight Of Romie/no Nest Or Eggs And She Looks Distressed And Is Claer She Wants Romie.

Any Advise Would Be Appreciated

From Teresa

My advice would be to keep them separated. I'm fine with having 2 same species in the same cage, but once they fight enough to seriously injure each other, its time to give them their own cages with the possibilty of monitored out of cage time together. This is JMO.

Are you sure you have male and female, and not two females??? That or you just have an overly aggressive female...

I suggest keeping them separate but having their cages next to eachother... at least 1/2 or more apart to not cause problems.... if they are friendly they can be allowed supervised out of cage time, but otherwise I suggest keeping them apart.

Romeo and Juliet have divorced

Monica

thank you for reply. Very sad that Romie has been attcked by Julie.
He is in a bad way, although the vet and pet shop suggest re introducing HOW COULD I? just could not take the chance as I love them both so much and to see Julie so frustrated and upset and Romie so poorly it has been such a shock
I appreciate your advise

It's hard to say if you'll be able to keep them together again, but you might be able to allow supervised out of cage time... for the time being I suggest keeping them separate until they decide to happily co-exist together in the same cage.... which could be never.

with my first pair of zebras, roy & joy, after i had them about a month, roy began plucking joys feathers out during preening sesions starting with her head, then down her back, not realy fighting like yours, but probably just over agresive preening. i put her in a cage, and put it in the aviary so he could still get near her without actual contact. he would sleep on top of her cage, cause he missed her. after two weeks, her feathers were coming back in she looked real good, so i tried putting her back with him, and he was so glad to see her, his agresive behavior was gone and he treated her very well. maybe it was just luck, i dont know, but maybe, after a while, you could reintroduce them to the same cage again, and watch them closely and maybe they will be so glad to be together, the will get along better. just a suggestion, hope it works as well as mine cause it would be sad if they have to be seperated permenetly.

Discuss the problem with the vet while you're there and see what he/she recommends.

vet is superb
romie now set up in his new very large palace. vet said he is on the mend.
to keep cages side by side then when romie is back and fit i am to give them supervised time together and take it from there.
if they get on ok to leave them longer and longer. but next time she lays eggs to seperate the pair for a while.
im nervous but will see and let you know

thank you
