bands

Can someone explain the difference between an open band and a closed band, besides the obvious?

My 23 year old BFA has a rounded band on his leg, and it is not closed. A lady who owns a bird store once told me this means he was wild caught. Is this true?

The person I bought him from said she raised him from an egg. He was 12 when I bought him.

I am no expert...

Could be that it was wild caught.. or it could be that the bird is a lot older then you were told and the band was added?

No idea... other members will chime in soon though!

Yes, open round bands usually mean the bird was wild-caught. However, I believe (don't hold me to this) that these bands were also available to California breeders. If you can read the letters/numbers on the band, it will confirm which U.S. port the bird came through, i.e., MIA for Miami.
