Just watch where ya put it on the outside to prevent possible injury to people passing by (he says as he rubs his shoulder).

Basically same here as Jim,
I had just natural wood, cholla, and pumice perches in my Ekkies cage until early this year, then I put a rope perch in, and she loves it! She simply loooooves to just sit on her rope perch and rub her beak on it forever!! It's like she is giving herself a massage. |

Ollie has a huge variety of perches that I rotate every couple weeks. I completely rearrange her cage (position of toys and perches).
I've heard from many an Ekkie owner that because the females tend to be such hormonal birds, its important to change positions of perches and toys every week or so as well. This prevents them from becoming comfortable enough in their cage to start nesting and egg-laying behaviors.

I find that with my Jardine he prefers the rope perches, as they tend to have chicken feet so there wider , but as for my cockatiel I try to use wood perchs as she tends to " string" all the rope ones lol
better safe then sorry |

Thanks guys! Currently I have rope, natural wood, sand, and (1) heated perches! I think a variety is best as well! Never a dull moment in her cage, I suppose! I think I'll add more wooden and sand perches because I see so many adult Ekkies with over grown beaks.
We also switch her cage decor and interior around weekly to prevent boredom, routine, and nesting behavior!! |

Natural wooden perches are indeed great because they have varying diameters, which are great for the feetwork.... however, rope perches are good too, to help give the feet a rest from hard surfaces... having wood only (or sanded-rough surfaced perches) can cause foot sores.
