Leuprolide acetate

I am posting this "Topic" here in it's own thread because I think it interesting enough to pass along. The original mention of this drug is here: http://www.birdboard.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2973

Leuprolide acetate is nothing more than chemical castration. It is used in Prostate cancer patients and lowers the testosterone levels dramatically.
My personal opinion is that it should not be given to birds, ... read the following and then think about what that would actually do and mean for your bird to have to take this, and/or live with the consequences.

My Ruby gets Haloperidol twice a day and I wish she didn't have to ... I just HATE seeing any bird ... medicated. So my opinion is a bit biased.
Thought someone might be interested.

why is your bird on an antipsychotic? It's an effective antipsychotic for the treatment of schizophrenia. Also used for schizoaffective disorders, acute psychosis, paranoid syndrome, and Tourette's syndrome. Oftentimes for agitation and aggression in humans. Is this why your bird is on it?

Yes those are pretty much the reason for Ruby getting that particular med. Her Vet, whom I trust, said we should try it to stop her from plucking and having, ... what we have termed, "Freak out sessions" , sort of like convultions, and they have been reduced in frequency by said Med.
Ruby came to us with lots of baggage and zero feathers. The feathers have regrown only to be partially removed again, and the baggage has gotten lighter, but there's still lots of work ahead of us.
After all, it's only been 7 months since she came to live with us.

wow. I didn't even realize that it could be prescribed for birds? It's amazing the avian medicine practice. I'm glad its helping Ruby. Hopefully, between that and your love, she will become a happier companion bird :)

Antipsychotics have horrible side effects on humans.. I can only imagine the side effects it would have on a bird :aiwebs_01
