The second hand bird

I'm really writing this post to express how much I love my little foster birdie. It took me 2 years before I was ready to bring a second hand bird home, and I'm glad I waited because I needed the time to study up on parrots. But this little girl is such a blessing. She sits and preens my hair and eyelashes, sings along with me, and bites whenever my other two come close
But to those who are sitting on the fence about bringing a bird home that has a 'past', go for it. They are infinitely more grateful than what you brought home from the breeders

I have two second hand birds, a Mitred Conure and a Cockatiel. Danny (Mitred) was scared to death of us when he first came home, if we stood in the same room with him he would jump in his cage and hide in the corner. But two months later he adores my husband (still won't have anything to do with me, he's not scared of me, he just doesn't like me, lol). He lets my husband kiss him and rub him and always steps up for him, they are buds for sure. But it was very hard at first! But Danny was meant to be here with us and it was a great decision to get him.

Almost all of my fids are "used" birds. I know most of the history for some of them and others are from shelters and we will never know.

all but 2 of mine are "used" birds as well. I have been lucky, for the most part, they have been "gently used"

I am probably the BIGGEST supporter of 'used' fids you'll ever meet.

All of mine, every single one has been a rescue. I refues to buy baby birds...my morals and principles run too deep for me to willingly buy a baby. I don't have that 'god/rescuer' complex I just believe that with the over abundance of parrots that are already out there we should not be making more for people to screw up.

I have been rewarded over and over with my fids...it takes time and patience however. You must be willing to handle a biting bird with a past. If you can get past that and earn a birds trust...it is there forever!

How lucky can you be to take in a needy fid and love it?

Dani

I have a chance to get a "used" sun conure 9 mo. old with cage 450.00. is that a good price? i dont know how big the cage is, she said large, but thats all relitive i'll ask the dimentions next time we talk. the family says its too loud,so she has to get rid of it. how much $$ do they average at a store or breeder? i'll get it with my tax return.

At petstores (like Petco) they are like $550, but you can get them at a breeder for about $300, so I say if it has a big enough cage that's a good deal. Plus it's still a baby! I hope you get him/her!
