Little Bit Lory Final diagnosis

For those of you who remember my original post over a week ago:

The pathology is finally back on Little Bit. The diagnosis is blunt force trauma to the liver and the bile ducts are not working properly due to the trauma. I missed the call from the hospital, so I am waiting to get the details on what we do now. She did say they are adding a third medicine to help with that. I just keep thinking about my original vet prescribing all the antibiotics over a four month time frame, and at the end going to injections twice a day. I feel I am so lucky he is alive at this point. How his liver handled all the medication, I just don't know. It just goes to show you, ALWAYS get a second opinion. Let me add, that I do still respect my vet and his capabilities, he went above and beyond in his care and treatment, it was just the wrong treatment this particular time. He has cared for my birds close to 15 years.

Also another warning... I have ceramic tile flooring which is hard and I remember Little Bit taking a bad fall months ago and then him sitting still for a minute then limping off and then he seemed fine. I remember going... "oh no, that doesn't look good", and then when he seemed to shake it off, I felt relieved and then forgot about it. If I had to make a guess, that would be when the trauma happened. I am going to put something soft on the floor in the bird room. Any suggestions? Carpet- not gonna work with the poop factor.

Thanks again for all the prayers and well wishes and support. Thank God I did not just euthanize him based on my original vets' diagnosis. I feel at least now, maybe there is some hope.

Lisa

Let me add the hospital did call back and the trauma could be from 3 things: blunt force, a toxin that has now gone, or an infection that is now gone. They will never know, because what ever it is/was is now gone. They are hopeful that his liver can regenerate enough to support his system. So now we support, watch and wait. I can live with that.

Lisa, I am very happy you went with a second opinion. Little Bit is very lucky to have you as a mom. Sometimes we have to look inside ourselves to see what is best with our birds. I know your original vet suggested to put him down. somethin in you as his mom said NO. goes to show, we have a connection with them that goes above and beyond what many think.

Prayers that Little bit continues to get stronger EVERYDAY, and hats off to you for following your heart!

The vet did say it is entirely possible Little Bit's liver could regenerate to the point of being able to support his body.
