A CANARY HEN THAT I LOVE, DOESN'T FEED HER NEWBORN CHICKS... SO SHE KILLED THEM ALL OF STARVATION!!! THIS IS THE SECOND TIME SHE S DOING IT. THE FIRST TIME I LEFT THE MALE ALL THE PERIOD IN THE SAME CAGE, THE 2ND I TOOK THE MALE OUT BUT STILL SHE DIDN T CHANGE ATITUDE. DOES ANYONE HAS A CLUE OF THIS SPECIFIC PROBLEM, AND CAN I DO SOMETHING FOR IT. I ALSO TRY TO FEED THE CHICKS BUT THEY DIDN T SURVIVE...

I haven't had this problem, but the canaries that I adopted were raised by their dad; mom died in childbirth (well, the birdie equivalent) and he raised the three babies. Maybe try leaving the babies with your male next time. May also be worth working with a breeder to perfect your hand feeding technique just in case. I have been told it is quite a challenge. Sorry for your loss.

If she is your only canary hen, DO NOT BREED HER AGAIN.
If you have another pair of canaries that you can breed at the same time you can destroy a few eggs from each nest and put the bad mother's eggs in the other nest and let the good mother hatch and rear the babies. The best thing to do would be to NOT BREED her again. Some hens are just not good mothers. Also, all canaries, both males and females should be provided with high calcium food during breeding season: cottage cheese, boiled egg yolk with egg shell ground up in the chopped yolk, apple slices, slices of cucumber, romaine lettuce, never iceberg lettuce.di |
