Thanks for everyones input it is very difficult to decide as i have so much choice. I fell for the conure as someone told me they where very good with children and they do not bond with one person. I firstly wanted a quaker but my sister is haveing a green cheek conure and the man she is getting him off said quakers are very loud and they are not suitable in a small house because of the noise, he did recomend a conure instead.

For the most part conures are not known to be quiet, and there is always a chance a bird will bond to one person.

Pollo's cage is 22 by 24 with a playtop. The bar spacing is 7/8.This is the smallest I would recomend for a blue crown. Please listen to the very LOUD call of a blue crown before you bring one home. They are great birds if you can take the blood curdling scream.

Love the Blue Crowns

All conures have the potential to be one person birds. Having every person in the house handle them from day one and take turns cleaning their cage, feeding them and socializing them with day trips out of the home, meeting new people, etc. could help. I for one would get a very sweet baby if you want this to be a more than one person bird. Nippy babies are just tough to start off with for people who are scared of being bit such as a child.

I have owned or cared for nandays, cherry heads, green cheeks, mitreds, patagonians and blue crowns. I would have to say the nandays had a piercing shriek similiar to the sun conure. The cherry heads and blue crowns have more of a grating/ loud honking sound. Ofcourse if the bird talks and they are the only bird sound can often be managed somewhat by rewarding the sounds you prefer they make and ignoring the loud calls. They shouldn't be expected to be quiet all the time though. Conures needs to be loud a couple times a day usually, such as fussing at the dog or just saying its morning! I want some attention.

My favorites of all the conures were blue crowns. They are so silly, real animated jokers and often talk very well but not guaranteed. The cherry heads are a close 2nd in just my experience. Good luck whatever you decide.

Well, I think cage spacing 5/8ths or 3/4 would be optimal and no smaller than a 24 x 22 if they will be on a playstand often. If in the cage alot make sure to get a 32x20 something. Even if in the cage throughout the whole 8 hour day a young blue crown will definitely enjoy the 32 length and make use of it. It might even reduce teritorialism of the cage slightly.

Quakers arent that loud? sure it's a quaker? They make weird sounds though, suns are loud, my favourites are the green cheek conures. Think they are adorable, quiet and just so cute. Also the patagonians are cute, big though but cute and i think the golden conures are beautiful.

I have a sun and a cinnamon green cheek. My sun is louder than the green cheek, but she's pretty quiet compared to other sun conure tales I've heard... just a little scream in the morning and a little at dinner time.
My green cheek is the most loving little bird ever. She's more than happy to sit on me while I do stuff around my home and she's friendly with anyone who'll let her sit on them. My sun is a young one who's showing more and more personality each day and growing into the prettiest little bird.

I'd go with a green cheek. I've found them nothing but friendly, playfull and happy birds that are great with kids.

alright - just for clarification: conures as a species (however it is defined ) are LOUD.... there are some general exceptions such as the Pyrrhura subspecies, but even within this group you have no guarantee that the bird will be rather quiet. conures are simply not quiet birds for the size you're looking at. (at least that's the realization i come to when the sun, the peach front and the green cheek start up for a concert - no wonder the neighbors complain)

the one-person thing IMO is heavily related to how the bird's raised and socialized - again, despite vague generalizations there's no given species that will overbond or not for that matter.

birds and children is tricky - many here have birds and children, i don't so i won't comment much on it and leave that to experienced members

though conures are known to be clowns and funny which makes them attractive, there are lots of other species out there that can accommodate your needs maybe even better. pionus are great pets and relatively quiet (one of my dream birds). also, sennies and meyers.... give it a thought

if you wanna go with a conure you have to decide HOW important the noise level is for you - if noise is a concern, i'd recommend a greencheek or peach front (nino is actually pretty quiet, and his screech is not as high-pitch). however, greencheeks can be nippy and can bond to the main caregiver easily. they're energetic little birds who sometimes forget how small they are (valo would take on a 200lbs man any minute). blue crowns, mitred, cherry heads, jendays, nandays and suns are great great pets, funny and loving companion, clownish and acrobatic - IF you can tolerate their loudness
