Which conure
Hi i wandering if anyone could help me, i am looking at getting a conure as a companion for my family and i. I have been looking in to it for a while (even got a cage ready) i am just a bit stuck on which one to get i have been too a few breeders and i am impressed with them all, I have seen a turquoise mutation green cheeck, jenday, blue crowned, and yellow sided green cheeck. We are a very busy house hold and more offten than not there is always someone around our house. I know they are not great talkers but some of them do talk this is important to my 7 year old daughter only. I just want a bird that is easy going and loves to play and enjoy life and that is why i chose the conure, So all advice and oppinion is welcome many thanks karen

Hi Karen. If your cage is big enough, the Jenday or Blue Crown would have a higher likelihood of speach. With that comes louder vocalizations in general. Any of the conures you are looking at have the potential to make a great pet.Our Blue Crown was wild caught and had owners that didn't treat him well but goes wilingly to my 10 year old.

Hi Skip - I personally do not have any conures but recently went thru all of the research trying to find the "perfect" species for our family - we too are busy with 3 kids from 6 to 17, a couple of dogs, a couple of other fids - so we were looking for a fid which would be playful and enjoy time to play - not attach or bond with just one person in the family - and at the same time was ok with and could entertain themselves for periods of time in other words not a velcro birdy. After much research we came up with the Caiques - the main reason we choose a Caique over a conure was the "scream" screetch or however you want to term it - Yummy our White Bellied Caique has a "come here" screetch which is not deafening and sort of cute! I wish you luck and have fun with whichever fid you decide suits your family best!

I can`t vouch for other conures, but I have a sun, a female, who I bought from a pet shop when she was 2 years old. She is now 6. She is still as loving as the day I bought her, she is the only bird I have that will allow me to reach into the cage and pet her. She is a little on the shy side, but she really is very sweet. Yes, she does have her screamy moments, but I either ignore it or cover her when it goes on entirely too long, and then she shuts right up. I always uncover her later after she`s calmed down, then I pay attention to her. If you make a fuss over them when they`re screaming, it usually reinforces that behavior, but any bird is like that. I find she doesn`t usually scream very long though. And she does talk a tiny bit, she says something which sounds very much like "pretty bird". Even my husband can tell what she`s saying. We just adore her. And they are soooo beautiful, I think they are the prettiest conures there are. Of course, I might be somewhat biased.
![]() We also have a blue front Amazon, who never screams, and I mean NEVER. I guess he never learned to. Our third bird is a Quaker, and although he is quite the character, he can certainly be trying at times, to say the least. |

Suns are playful and fun, but get an air-horn and sound it off every 5 seconds for like a minute, just to see if you can stand the noise. My Nandays are louder than my Suns.. and they have a daily competition to prove that fact everyday when I come home from work.
Jendays look like a lot of fun too. There's one at the local petshop but for $500 I think its too much. My 5 yr old daughter loves the sun conures, and they love her. I think they like her better than me! My 3 yr old boy is still claw-shy. If you're not too concerned about talking, Pionus are wonderful little birds. They're less hyper than conures. I had a bronze winged pionus a long time ago.. she was a great bird. Right now Blue Headed Pionus are pretty easy to find. Might wanna check them out, too. |

I currently have a Nanday - He talks, is a super-snugglebutt, and I admittedly don't mind the noise. (Unless he's on my shoulder when he sounds off. That can make you deaf for a few seconds.)
But I'm getting a GCC this coming Friday. - I'll have to let you know how that goes! |

Just thought I'd share my experience with a conure. I also have a Nanday, he is our one and only at the moment, but he is very loving and has not bonded to either of us, he'll even let strangers handle him within half hour of meeting them. Very loving and is always ready to play!
NaniOokima, let me know how you make out with the GCC/Nanday. I am also planning on getting a GCC in the next couple of months! |

well, personally, i love the patagonian conures, although they can be hard to find, HUGE loves they are!! and i fell in love with a jenday conure from work too, i know both of these species are great :D BUT, make it a point to listen to their noises and screeches BEFORE you take one home, conures are one of the loudest types of birds!!
