I think personalities do tend to follow a species. I can speak for my little green cheek conure and caique. The conure (and from what I have heard is consistent with many conures) is playful (on his terms), EXTREMELY affectionate, wants to be with me all the time, very quiet, rarely nippy (outgrew it FINALLY), and intelligent. The caique is rambunctious, extremely active, not so affectionate but loves for me to snuggle him, and has a rare dangerous temper. He plays and wrestles nonstop and reminds me of a puppy. He is destructive, has a loud call, and is always getting into things. He requires a LOT of time. I am constantly entertaining him. Both birds are also very curious and love to explore and investigate things (as long as I am nearby).

You're right. They're all different. If you want to read a little funny about their "dark side", read my thread under macaws. "What a booger". My macaw is going through a molt right now and many of them are grouchy during this time.

You also may want to look at the different forums for specifics birds. i.e. amazons, macaws, etc. and see what different owners are saying about their specific types of birds. That may help you decide on a certain species.

budgies are very talkative and chitter chattery tiels are whistles and pretty playful little birds

Green Cheek Conures are quiet/LOVE to play/and at times can be a bit nippy

Sun conures are very social and voice the "opinions" about everything//

however generally every bird can have a different personality just like people...just read up and you'll get a fairly good idea what birds have what kind of Personality...

Each bird is so different and it varies even more within each species. Was there a certain type of bird you were looking for? Or restrictions when it comes to getting one? There's size, loudness, noisiness, playfulness, destructive, nondestructive, territorial, cuddly, chatty, docile, aggressive, etc etc. The list goes on.
Sometimes its best to take a look at the lifestyle you lead and pick a bird that would best fit it, instead of looking at the personalities of ALL the birds. That's like asking someone to tell you what every species of dogs are like. It's a bit overwhelming.

Here's a fairly good chart for you to look at: Parrot Species Comparison Chart ….Compare The Most Popular Parrot Species!
