Letting go of my best friend

Hey guys... IM new here... i live in australia... and i am(or was) a proud owner of a major mitchells cockatoo....named mitchell..

Mitchell has been with me and my family for two years.... The last couple of months we have seen activity of mouse/rats... all wires chewed for the tv, stereos and whatnot...turds in cupboards...

My mother loves my bird dearly.... but she hates rats....
I have the option to put him outside... but i live in a rough sort of town and alot of birds go missing here ... no doubt he will be gone overnight...padlocked or not... Also the fact he can get VERY noisy.

Mitchell is currently a bird shop... He will be on trial for a week ... and if all goes well he will have a new home as a pet shop bird along with 2 others....
The whole family cant stop crying and im not sure what to do... there is literally RATS everywhere.... my house is VERY clean.. I make sure everynight mitchells cage is CLEANED spotless and his food is Locked up in a cupboard in a airtight container... In twenty years of living in my house theres been no rats at all... until the bird came along...

I would really like to keep mitchell but theres no possible way i can.... has anyone got any ideas? PLEASE HELP!

Heres mitchell awoken up and p*ssed off from a very bright flash in the morning

Brad....

How about a cat or small dog for the rats (one that is used to hunting of course) I don't think they will disappear without Mitchell. It is hard to keep them out of the house when they are looking for food and water. Then, if that works, you can convince Mom to bring him home? (Of course you will have to work out boundaries with Mitchell and the new pet then)

What have you tried so far to get rid of the rats? It's likely the rats will go away as the season changes. Your bird has been with you for two years and in only the last couple months there have been rats, so it's probably coincidence that you have rats right now especially since you keep everything so clean. Owning birds doesn't really attract rats. I've had birds for 8 years and there's been absolutely no infestation of any animal or insect....

Actually, since you do keep Mitchell and his stuff so clean, maybe that's a direct indication that it isn't the bird that is attracting rats...?

We live in the Mountains/woods. Our property is full of natures wonderful little and big creatures. Anyways when we moved here we soon learned that come winter time those creatures wanted to come in to get warm too. We had a BAD mice problem, I mean they were everywhere. Since we have animals and I have chemical sensitivity problem, I can't spray or have my house sprayed. Someone turned me on to this wonderful product. You can order it online and it WILL solve your problem and your bird gets to stay indoors. It is fox-bobcat urine. It works, and it doesn't smell like what it sounds like, we don't even notice the odor like an animal will. I put it in the house first, they were gone that every day. The next day we lined the outside of the house with it. We haven't seen a mouse for 5 years.
You can do a search for it, I did a quick search for you and here is just one site, but you can see what it does, I hope this helps you.

Shake-Away fox and bobcat urine

Repels: Mice, rats, moles, voles, shrews.

Creates the illusion that fox and bobcats are in your lawn!

Our new Shake-Away Fox/Bobcat Urine powder uses the effectiveness of fox and bobcat urine and blends them together with our first-of-its kind, patented powder formula to create the safest, most effective, 100% organic product available.

Shake-Away is 100% organic fox and bobcat urine, the same scent that researchers, outdoor enthusiast and photographers have used for many years.

Without harming the enviroment, your family or animals, Shake-Away Fox/Bobcat Urine uses the same laws as nature does.

It is easy to see why powdered predator urine is superior over liquid:

Powdered urine is less messy than liquid. Our patented powder formula neutralizes the acid so it won't burn your plants like liquid will.
Powdered granules are "heavy." They won't wash away in rain like liquid will.
Powder won't evaporate or freeze like liquid will.
Powder urine is guaranteed to last longer than liquid.
Powder granules are naturally moist for better "clinging."

COVERAGE:
Each 20 ounce bottle of Shake-Away™ will cover approximately 375 to 625 linear feet when applied as directed. This is equal to 3750 to 6250 square feet of protection per bottle. You will receive up to five (5) feet of protection on each side of the powder when applied directly on the ground.

Shake-away's patented formula will not harm or burn your plants, bushes, or trees
Shake-away is not affected or diluted by light or moderate rain, but may need to be reapplied after a heavy rain
Shake-away is 100% natural, non-toxic and safe for use around children, pets, plants, and the environment

Instructions:

General: Apply Shake-away powder twice a week for the first two weeks, then twice a month for maintenance. Allow up to two to three weeks for Shake-away powder to take full effect.

Burrowing: Sprinkle Shake-away powder directly into every hole you find in your yard, flowerbeds, along foundations, etc.

Tunneling: For tunneling, poke a two-inch deep hole every three to four feet along all tunnels. Sprinkle Shake-away powder into each hole and then cover with dirt.

Inside of Buildings - Attics, Basements, Garages, Sheds: Place two to four ounces of Shake-away powder on a paper plate or the like. Place one plate per every 8' x 10' area (80 square feet). Replace every four to six weeks or as needed.

Outside of Buildings: Sprinkle Shake-away powder near small cracks or openings along the foundation of your house, garage, shed, or other buildings.

SOrry to hear that...We had a rat problem once, but not because of our pets. They were ripping up land around us to build houses and it sent the rats on the move. Not to mention we had a neighbor who was giving the rats food and a place to live. they dumped garbage out on the side of the house and left it, never cut their lawn. We found tunnels from under their patio and into our yard. So many people called the the board of health and such and nobody did a thing.

We got so tired of it, we started to set traps and killed them ourselves. Dogs do help thou, they chase the rats away.
