Oh no...

My bird has a gurgly sound to his breathing and a wheeze. He's also sneezed a couple of times and he's a little puffed up. This is not good. I have an appointment Monday at 10:00 a.m. He's eating ok, but I'm a little wigged out. He was recently diagnosed with liver disease and stayed at a veterinary hospital for a couple of days. Do you think he picked something up staying at the hospital for 2 days? He tested neg for any kind of infection when he was there (week before last). I'm not sure if it has something to do with his liver, or he contracted something.

Hey Lisa- my original vet had him on an antifungal for months, then switched to antibiotics the last month before the hospital. No meds except for his liver since the hospital visit.

can be two things. The use of antibiotics without the antifungals.
OR
Little Bits resistance being low and something else that has been dormant showing up now.

I would call UT and let them know Asap. Gurgling and wheezing are not usually good.

(sorry this is so short,,not feeling well)

I have an appointment with my local vet Monday a.m. - There is no way I could get in UT earlier than that. Last time was a 1 week wait for an "emergency appointment". Even if they prescribed something, they would have to ship it next week. I'm very nervous. Right now, I'm just hoping he holds steady until Monday morning. My local vet has been filled in with all the info from his hospital stay, tests and meds. I am going to start making a list of questions for my vet. I am going to ask about antibiotics without antifungals. What should I ask? I thought I heard something Friday, I knew I should of taken him in. Then Sat (today it was worse) I tried to call my vet, but they were closed early on Sat. It's not an "emergency" per se, so I didn't want to call him at home. I HATE this. He is playing and eating ok, but you can really hear it. Crap. If I really get scared, I'll take him into the emergency clinic here, but I'm just not sure how much they know about birds.

well, the weezing would be some distress with the lungs or air sacs.

It could be something pressing up against the lungs or airsacs.Gurgling would be fluids.

is he pumping his tail?

The reason I mentioned UT is because they can work with your reg vet. you have a better chance if they extend a hand out to your vet, then your vet asking for help, if that makes sence. If you call them and let the Dr there know, they might be aware of a side effect of the meds that he is taking.

Sometimes birds who are on antibiotics will get secondary infections from the meds...kinda like us ladies when on antibiotics. some get yeast infections.
antifungals help keep the yeast at bay or get rid of it.

Thanks Lisa. I'm anxious. Figures it's the weekend. Yes, he is pumping his tail slightly. He had a similar sound right before I took him to UT, The wheezing where his liver was compressing his air sacs, so I decided not to panic because I had heard it before, and he was checked so thoroughly a week and a half ago, but now it is back and I hear a "wet" gurgling sound too. The only med he is on now is Lactulose with milk thistle. Pls don't get any worse...
