Talking Animal Sanctuary in Roatan (pictures)

Ok, so I've had time to get my pics organized and now it is time to tell you and show you a little of what I did on vacation in Roatan Honduras. A long story made short... Bradleyzoo contacted me about a volunteer work day at the local animal sanctuary on the island, Blue Ocean Reef Animal Sanctuary. Anyway, a group of us got together to build a temporary enclosure for a couple of spider monkeys that had been turned over to the sanctuary from a local resort. Keep in mind as you look at these pictures that this sanctuary is just starting to really get off of the ground and these enclosures are all temporary. Dr Baird is doing the best he can with what is available and we were all happy to help out.

So here we go...
This is all of us preparing the site for the new enclosure...

This is the progress that was made by lunch time...

Here is the group of volunteers at lunch break...

The following are some shots of the residents of the sanctuary...

This poor guy had just recently been rescued and has a ways to go but has already shown great improvement...

Those are about all the pictures I have because my camera was full at the time and I didn't get back there to get pictures of the finished project. I know Dr Baird was very happy with how fast everything went. They had several other animals at the sanctuary as well. A young Jaguar kitten, some pasotes, several kinds of monkeys, a sloth and numerous types of amazon parrots and two types of macaws. Maybe Bradleyzoo will have a chance to run by and get some pictures of the finished product and post them. It was a great experience and I was very happy to be there.

Thanx for sharing. That's the kind of thing I'd love to be doing. I love the Military Macaw pic. Looks so cute.

I'm in NY and it's freezing here. How I'd love to kick back with the guys in that picture and have a beer myself!

I am actually amazed at the number of toucans I have seen down there. Most of them I saw were pets that have been very well cared for and very beautiful. It was a joy to sit and watch them.

If they were easier to bring back to the states I probably would have brought one myself, but as it is they have to go through a minimum 30 quarantine at an approved facility at the owner's expense. That would be pretty hard on them I think.

There all beautiful birds, so glad they have the rescue. I love the toucans too. I would be scared to death with that beak though and I thought the macaws had big beaks. LOL I am a wimp when it comes to the beak size.
