Check your dates!!!!!

Yesterday I had ended up with a bag of way out dates pellets.I am very slack about checking the dates.Normally I get all my food ordered in just for me every 2 weeks. That store(not a chain store) has a new person doing the ordering and they didn't realize that what they ordered me was only going to last me 2 weeks,so I had to go to one of the local chain stores.Rather then retype the whole story here is a copy of the email I sent to their headquarters and also to kaytee.

To Whom it may concern:

On Feb. 20,2007 my ex husband visited the Pet Supplies Plus #05 in Toledo, OH. to purchase a bag of Kaytee Exact Organic Parrot Conure Size UPC # 7185947526. When he arrived to my house with the bag I proceeded to open the bag and was greeted with a very rancid smell. Being a long time user of the product I knew the smell was not a good thing. I checked the expiration date on the bag and it was June 17,2006. Imagine my utter surprise that he had purchased a bag that was 8 mths past expiration. Yes, it was his fault for purchasing that bag without checking the date, but honestly should there have even been a product on the shelf that old? I called the store and explained it to the manager, and was told I could bring it back and exchange for another bag. I asked them to please check and see if they had any bags that were not outdated and was told they had one. I took the bag back and was given an even exchange, but there was no apology offered for the inconvenience. And the worst part, there were still out dated bags on the shelf's!!!!!!! I told the young lady at the register that they needed to be removed before someone's bird died from eating them and was told they would try to get to that. Try to get to that, what kind of answer is that. As far as I'm concerned they should have been removed 2 hrs prior when I called the store manager and made her aware of the situation. I own 22 birds ranging from Quakers to Macaws and 2 Saint Bernards as far as I'm concerned with an attitude like that you don't need my business.Thank you for your time.

So make sure you are checking those dates,I know I won't let it slip again.

Good for you. I hope someone takes some action. I've seen that at two different pet stores. One was a chain, and the other a small pet shop. I didn't tell them, because I noticed that they both mark down items "on sale" that include outdated food. I just used it as a learning experience.

Ewww is right!! It's all about the almighty dollar isn't it? Good for you for writing that letter. Let us know if anything comes of it. At the minimum there should be an apology issued.

Thanks for the reminder!

I went to a pet store yesterday while I was out and was looking at the bird stuff. Just about every bag of food and treats I picked up was WAY out of date. I think one expired in 2005. These stores need people who check these things out on a daily basis.

Same here...it is VERY hard to find food and treats that are NOT expired. I never buy anything that is expired.

Cool

One time I found out of date pellets and food at the local store that I shop at... the employees imediantly pulled the pellets and food when informed... and started checking ALL the other bird supplies... and found out of date stuff that I missed (some of the "treats"and food addatives) and pulled it right then...

The store now checks ALL pet food weekly and pulls anything that is within a week of being expired now....

I still check expiration dates when shopping there.. and have yet to find anything expired since.....

I enjoy shopping there even more now.. because this show care and concern of the store... and this is a LARGE hardware store out in the country.... that stocks ALOT of things and animal feeds.....

This store even special orders supplies for me and has started carrying more bird/parrot items since others have asked/inquired about availabliity of parrot supplies.. and has realized that alot more local people have parrots than they though...
