We have decided to keep the Quaker
-First and foremost thank you all for your replies. Very encouraging.
-We happened to find an ad in the local free penny saver type paper at Wally World that showed a bird club meeting today. We attended and could not believe the wonderful folks we met. One has volunteered to help us with the bird a number of days down the road and even keep he/she for a couple of days of training/diagnostics if necessary. We also got to met a good new Vet. who does birds and takes new patients. We bought the "guide to the Quaker Parrot" by Mattie Sue Athan. And found out about a big local bird show next weekend. Both the wonderful folks here on the net and those we met today have convinced us bird owners are a wonderful flock. So we laid down our dues and joined the local club. If we get another bird it will be because most bird owners seem to have to have more than one. Promise one will not get neglected due to another bird, but that is probably down the road Thanks again for all your encouragement and honest replies. It is probably old news to ya'll but the main problem could very well be where we purchased our Quaker. Made 8 trips there before we bought and had some reservations. The club members were all well aware of this facility. |

That's great news!
That's wonderful that you found a local bird club - having bird people around you both locally and online is such a HUGE help! Please keep us updated on your baby and let us know if we can help with anything else - training, diet, toys, etc.

Excellent news!! It's wonderful that you were able to find some local support in the form of a club. Birds are not an "easy" pet to figure out, and its normal to feel overwhelmed at first. I remember that feeling very well! They certainly are worth the time and trouble though. Fascinating and often perverse little guys!!

Thank you for giving this poor guy a chance at a good life. He needs help and can't do it on his own. And would probably end up in rescue or neglected sitting in a cage forever in the wrong home. Regardless of his attitude right now he will definitely improve with trust, a good night's DARK sleep every single night in a quiet room, a predictable schedule, enrichment and good food. Easy, huh? LOL
Just like some wild Monks, I know of some Quakers who are devoted "weavers". They wake up every day intent on working on their current weaving project. You may want to offer some good shredding toys to begin with and see if it helps him occupy his time and work out some frustrations. Great idea to join a club. |
