If you have birds and dogs, be careful about grapes!

I know lots of you have both birds and dogs. My fids think it is pretty fun to throw things at the dogs - consequently I've got a couple of dogs who think walnuts are yummy and fun to crack.

This warning about raisins and grapes being toxic to dogs has been making the rounds on some of the dog rescue groups; I wanted to share it here.

I know some folks here feed grapes and unsulphered (natural) raisins to their birds. Please, if you feed grapes or raisins and also have dogs, be careful that your birds are are not giving your dogs access to them. I know I'm going to be VERY watchful any time my birds get grapes.

I heard about this! It is important since my dogs like to wander around the kitchen in hopes I will drop something they can gobble up!

Eep. I don't feed Schroeder grapes after his vet warned us that they can cause diabetes??

Our little dog definantly likes to crunch what he throws though - good thing to send out there!

Grapes and raisens are supervised. The nick names of Hoover and Kirby DO apply when it comes to these two of mine.

I heard about this also. I have a puppy and she is constantly hanging around our B&G's cage waiting for her to drop things. Now when I give our bird (baby girl) grapes I make sure I have her shut down in her cage to eat. All I have to make sure of now is that Bella (our puppy) stops trying to climb in the cage.

Yes, please dp be careful. I lost my beloved border collie Poppy Quest in the summer of 2005 to grape ingestion. Even with 1.5 weeks on kidney dialysis at Tufts she did not make it. I will no longer keep grapes in the house. And I recently had a costly scare when the cat knocked down a bag of dried fruit ( that I was given for Chrsitmas) from the top of the fridge and 2 of the dogs ingested it - first ingredient raisins . . . they spent three days on IV fluids and daily bloodwork before they could come home. Argh! (and then, one went back two days later for surgery for a blockage - apparently the stress of the first vet stay caused him to act completely out of character and eat part of a leash that caused a blockage. Definitely not a stellar week last week!!!!)
