Two Birds in One Big cage

HI

We have a 4month old Alexandrine and just wondering is it OK to put another bird in the cage? Like a young galah?

Will it be more difficult to train the birds and are the chances of the birds talking will be worst than just having one bird?

Cheers

its going to depend on if the birds get along. I don't know enough about either of those breeds but any of my four birds would be a disaster caged up together.

We tried putting the Alexandrine with other birds in a play stand and he was quite "nice" to them

That was on a playstand, not in a cage that may already be his... I wouldn't really recommend it to be honest. Right now, the only two birds that live together here (of different species), is my cherry head and very first cockatiel. They live together BY CHOICE, not because I want them to live together. To be honest, I never wanted them to be together in the first place, but they've become buddies, and I think with Casey being around Noel helped a lot.

I know that ringnecks can be very stubborn birds so may not do well with other species. It would really depend on the birds, however I don't recommend keeping two birds together unless by THEIR choice, but then it would also have to depend on the size difference between the birds... if it's too great probably not a good idea.

I would never put different species in the same cage (except from perhaps budgies and tiels), not even in a big cage (3x2x2 m or something). Even if it looks like they get along with each other itīs a great risk that someone gets badly wounded. The best for both birds would probably be to have a friend of their own species.

Why do you want to put them in the same cage?

The cage we have is quite big and thought they are quite in similar size, I guess we wont get another bird then as we cannot have another cage in the house

my opinion is no----whether the birds choose to spend their "out of cage" time together or not---they should all have their "own place" to go back to. not to mention housing two species together

Things that could happen---the most dominant will get the best items out of the food bowl leaving the rest for the other bird---the more dominant could pluck the less dominant bird.

We have two b & gs they came to us so plucked that the vet said they looked like "beak and feather" birds---they had always been in the same cage---the weaker got pushed off the cage/perch if we came close and the more aggressive ate first etc.

They are in separate cages now.

I'm sure that it has worked fine for some, but I would never do it.

Just my opinion for what it is worth............

I agree with everyone else about not putting 2 birds (esp. of different species) in the same cage.

How are things going with the alexandrine? Your last post about him you were still frustrated on how things were going. I would definitely wait until the alexandrine was more bonded with you and things were going well with him before introducing another bird into the house (in a separate cage).

I've successfully added a second bird to a cage. History: I got Bacio in Feb, 2005. He had his own cage. i got Bella in June, 2005. She came home with a larger cage (now 2 cages). Over the next 3 months I watched them interact on the living room floor, and they 'made friends' and started preening each other. I then moved Bacio into Bella's cage. I continue to watch them, however, as Bacio is entering sexual maturity. The first sign of tension and he goes back into his old cage.
