Goffin Molting?

Our Baby Ditty Goffin Cockatoo will be two years old in April 07; she has all the same feathers she had when we got her at 8 months. Baby Ditty has no feather dust either. She has been to the birdie vet and she checks out good. Has anyone herd of this before? Our Bare Eyed and Conure always have new feathers.

What did your vets say about it? I have an almost 3 year old Umbrella cockatoo this winter he's had his first good molt, not a full blown one yet but his best yet. Lots of molted feathers and a lot of new pins, but not totally covered.
As far as the dust, she should be producing dust. I don't know how dusty goffins are compared to M2's and U2's, but you should be seeing dust. You many want to make another appointment with your avian vet.

Goffin molting

The vet said, that is somewhat unusual, we’ll have to keep our eye on her. The only thing I can think of is that maybe she molted before we got her. She is a little dusty but not like the bare eyed, he was really dusty when we got him. Now the birds get at least 2 baths a week maybe that helps.

The bathing will definately help. I have to bath both of mine almost daily. Hmmm Have you looked up anything on the net?

Curious, what kind of diet is she on?

Goffin molting

Yes, I have looked on the net, and have not quite figured it out. I do remember when we got her at 6 months she had a lot of pin feathers on her neck that I helped her preen. WOW did she like that! I have only taken 2 feathers from the bottom of her cage. (I save every birdie feather). They all eat brown rice, pasta, eggs with steamed spinach, broccoli, Lafebers avi-cakes, and her favorite is Zupreem fruit blend, she dips the pellets in the water like she’s a conure. Also a small amount of Sun Seed Vita with tropical fruit. Thanks for your replys, your birds are cute!

Your more than welcome and thank you. I work for my avian vet and I'm going to have lunch with her tomorrow. If I remember, I'll ask her what she thinks.

Say if you sat down and preened her and rubbed the back of her neck, if you had a black shirt on and wiprd your hand on it, would you be able to see any dust?

Yes, she has some dust, not a lot, just no feather loss, and we don't need to trim her flight feathers as much as the other birdies. They just come in slower????

So she is producing dust, that's good. Absolutely no feather loss at 2 years old? My U2 is getting ready to turn 3 and hasn't gone through a full blown molt yet but about twice a year he does molt. This past January he had a mild one but his best one yet.

Goffin Molting

Ditty has lost 4 feathers in the last two weeks, that is the most feather loss in 1 1/2 years that we have had her!
