Advice on big scary sandy perch?

Hi everyone! It's been a while since I've posted, but have no fear, I'm usually lurking!

Yesterday I bought a sandy perch for Primer (CAG) to replace the cement perch, which just doens't seem to be doing the trick in helping me with his nails. Anyways, this morning I put the new Sandy perch in the same spot as his cement one was, and Primer is so petrified of it! This really suprises me, because he's never really shown fear towards any toys, other perches, etc. I also change his cage set up every few months and put in different sized rope perches, wood perches, etc. and he's never shown fear.

So far, what I've done is moved the sandy perch down low, almost to the grate, and I've moved it away from his food and water dishes. Is there anything else I can do to ease his fears? Should I take out the sandy perch at night? I don't want him to start plucking or something over this... he is beginning a molt. I hope this new fear isn't going to be a trend... I know that CAG's can be scaredy cats sometimes. Thanks in advance for your advice!!!

LaRissa,

I don't usually have an issue with my CAG Max accepting new things but when he does look at something suspicious I have found it's easier to place it near the cage not in it for a few days. If it's in his sight & doesn't eat/attack him than he's more accepting of me transferring it in the cage a few days later.
