But isn't kangaroo meat best avoided because of how it's... Well... "Caught"?
Kangaroos aren't farmed, so they're usually hunted from the wild in Australia, and the hunters... Aren't the good, interested in giving the animal a humane death, type... Don't suppose I could convince you to move onto feeding your pets some other type of meat? Not that any of the normal livestock is well looked after, either, but they don't have delicate social patterns getting ripped apart by over-hunting... Here's a link with captioned photos to back up what I say: http://www.insolidaritywithanimals.c...lery/kangaroos [WARNING: Although the first few photos on this gallery are of rescued kangaroos and those living happily, the last one on the first page, and those on the second page, contain images showing some of the slaughter I mentioned.] |

HT, yes I am aware of what the "media" say, but we actually have a shop here that sells it. I have plenty of wild kangaroos here in my "backyard" - easement actually and adjoining properties. Have had up to 18 kangaroos in one afternoon. I do love them, but as you said, there is probably a lot to say how all our "meat" is slaughtered. I probably would be vegetarian, if I thought too much about it. I also believe that that sort of cruelty is not as common as the media like us to believe. Having said all that, some of you probably think I am not a caring animal person, but I am, just I could buy lamb, pork, beef, chicken and even fish and they all probably did not have a quick death. I live in the country and sometimes the reality is shocking, but I do not treat my animals badly. Some actually think I spoil them. I love our wildlife and am sickened by some of what I see on TV or in magazines etc, but I truly believe it is in the minority. We see so many wild kangaroos here and birds, and it is just metres away from our back fence. I would be the first to get up in arms if I saw someone deliberately causing them harm.
Anyway, the baby kookaburra came back last night, we were sitting on our front verandah and he flew towards me and landed on the handrail. Gave me a fright as I was not expecting him and gave him a fright also. I got some meat for him and he came back and he ate heaps. This morning he flew off again. Hopefully he will come back regularly.

I don't eat it myself or feed to any animals, but you can actually buy kangaroo meat in the supermarket here.

I have eaten rabbit. My mum used to make rabbit spagetti. Apparently the Maltese side of my family used to breed rabbits for food. Sounds gross I know, but I guess it is a matter of what you get used to. I do not eat rabbit anymore now I have left home, and my mother does not cook it either.
This morning the kookaburra came back, this time he had a friend with him. I do not think it is family, but I hope he gets adopted into that family group.

I have tried emu once, it was ok, but not something I would want to eat everyday. I have also tried ostritch in South Africa which tasted a little better than emu, might have been better prepared though. I was staying at a backpacker place in Outshoorn and every morning they make one huge ostritch egg omelette and share it out, not bad actually!

I've only tried moose, deer, and antelope among the normal chicken, turkey, ham, and beef. I don't believe I've had buffalo before but tis a possibility.... My grandfather, when he was alive, said that he had tried frog legs, and I think someone mentioning snake before but not sure on that....
