Just reconfirms why I'm so glad I pay the bucks to have my birds seen by top avian vets. I just had a beak trim for my Hahn's, which was done by Dr. LaBonde in Colorado. Highly recommended vet to anyone in that area. Oh, I also take them to the vet to get their 'nails' done - haha!!

Court case won!!

After taking the Bird Store to court, the judge decided that indeed the pet store was to blame, as I had autopsy photos to prove the severity of the damage caused as a result of inexperienced staff trimming my beloved Birdie's beak.

I subsequently learned that Lori's beaks are much softer than larger parrots, and the young girl (about 18 years old) that trimmed my little guy's beak had only had about a month's training....and all the training was on larger parrots. The Dremmel was way too aggressive on my bird's beak, and the beak trimmed way too short, resulting in the inability by my bird to drink any water.

I still mourn for him...and my dog (birdie's best friend) has not been the same since. Finding little surprise feathers in old blankets...etc. both make and ruin my day....as I try to put it all behind me now.

Please spread the word....DO NOT HAVE PET STORES TRIM BIRD BEAKS.

I"m so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what you're still feeling.

Yours is not the first story I've heard of beak trimming deaths at pet stores. I always always always take my birds to my avian vet (also Jerry LaBonde in Colorado). If the bird starts to have problems, they have the equipment to handle emergencies. Pet stores do not. It doesn't guarantee that a bird will survive if it goes into shock but chances are considerably improved.

I could never trust my bird's trim to someone who is making minimum wage and is just passing through.

Why trim a beak if its not overgrown?

Sounds like a waste of money to me.

first off, im so sorry this happened to you, but at least the court made the right decision :) i have another friend that this very same thing happened to, but her baby that died was a gw with a crooked beak.

ive trimmed my own birds' beaks, but only if badly needed. i had an amazon that his beak was a little overgrown when i first got him. i filed it down a little bit with a nail file and after that, he was happy and kept his own beak trimmed. ive done a little bit of filing on other birds, but certainly nothing major. ive taken a macaw to a very good vet to get trimmed, they used the dremmel and it made me so freakin' paranoid, i hated taking her to get trimmed :( the noise from the dremmel and the strangers restraining her to trim her terrified the poor bird. we just try to give the birds a cement perch and lots of wood and other rough things so they can keep their own beaks trimmed :/

wow, scary. I am also a non-trimmer. Buy a good perch with sandy sides for trimming nails, and the birds will trim their own beaks as needed.
Quana was trimmed before she came home, I wonder how long it was... and I really can't imagine trimming a lorikeets beak...
