Unhappy Tragic Fire Takes the Lives of Saved Parrots

March 3, 2008 - We've just received word that there was a tragic fire at the Tall Grass Parrot Sanctuary in Topeka Kansas. Mollywood has worked closely with those at Tall Grass for several years and together we have saved many birds. From what we know, most of their birds were killed in this tragic fire. The owner of the sanctuary is in the hospital with 3rd degree burns to her feet, blisters in her nostrils and esophagus and smoke inhalation after she broke into the house to try and save the birds. The couple of surviving birds are undergoing expensive medical treatment for smoke inhalation. At this time, they have lost their entire facility and everything in it. We will let you all know when we know more. Right now they need our prayers and some emergency funds to try and support the survivors. Please help them if you can.

That story is soo sad, it gave me chills. Fire is my worst fear, with all of my animals home while I'm at work. We had one of those heat sensors put in that goes to the alarm company, and they would call the fire dept, but still it is very scary, I panicked once, because they called me at work to say the power was out in the house, hubby worked closer so he came home, but the power came on soon after, but here your pets could roast without ac, on a hot summer day.

I am trying to reach someone who can give more info on this situation. It sounds like there are birds in intensive care, and I'd like to know more about that.

**UPDATE** The fire broke out on Sat, Mar 1. the owner, Kail, broke thru the window using her forearms and was able to toss out 3-5 birds, but 25 perished. She is still in the hospital with 2 and 3 degree burns on her feet and hands. There is nothing left, so for the remaining birds they need stands and toys and everything else. And I suppose a place to live. Really really tragic, as most of these birds were taken from very horrible conditions and given a loving home.
