Anyone that's had both a Senegal & Meyers?

Hello everyone,

Ok. I think I've narrowed it down to either a Senegal or Meyers. There are no breeders in my area to see for myself firsthand so I am asking for your help in trying to decide which is best for me.

A bird that is not too noise is the first priority. Talking is not a high priority but it would a good talking ability would be nice. The senegal is supposed to have a good talking ability and is supposed to be full of personality (hang on one foot, lie on its back, etc., etc.). I've also heard that the senegal is a one person bird and if not socialized correctly can be aggressive towards others.

The meyers are supposed to have a fair ability to talk (not as good as the senegal). Also, I get the impression that the Meyers can be very shy or timid.

I really don't want to spend more than $300+/- for whatever parrot I choose.

Does the senegal or the meyers fit this description.

Thanks everyone!!!

I only have a Senegal. The noise being a problem worries me a little. It isn't to the point where it bothers neighbors, but my Sennie is rarely quiet during the day. She does talk up a storm, but she has her own somewhat shrill and loud call also. You have heard right about everything. She's a clown trying to get attention. My husband and grown daughter have almost given up petting her or holding her because she bites at them and kisses me. (starting to be one person bird) She cost me $399.00 in Southern IN.

Re: Senegal

I have a senegal and it is a sweet cuddly bird, that loves to be with me. It is quiet most of the time but has a shrill cry when it wants to. No bird is quiet in fact my budgie makes noise all the time....in fact I would say the budgie is the noisiest bird of the two. Hope this helps.

I have and have had numerous birds of each species (Meyers & Sennies) and would suggest you go with the Meyers = better disposition by far (quieter too) IMO & IME.

Joel -- Do you find that Meyer's parrots have LESS of a tendency towards favoring one person than the Senegal parrot? I think that BOTH are wonderful birds but I worry about the one-sided nature I've read to be associated with sennies.

Hard for me to give a "definite-in-all-cases" Yes response to your question, since I am the only one here at the Compound to actually handle most of my birds and interact with them. However, from what I have personally witnessed over the years relating to both my own & other keeper's birds, I would say YES = Meyers in general (IME) are more social and have less of a tendency towards favoring one person - how much less depends on the individual bird.

I have both and I would have to agree with the others here. I love my sennie, but at times she can give me a run for my money. I think a meyers would be the better "starter" bird.

Have you considered a green-cheeked conure? I ask because I have been trying to find a Senegal( had one years ago) and was told by some people in bird clubs to at least consider the Green cheeked conure, who is NOT loud, seems to love lots of people and are about the same size and price range....
I ended up falling in love with a lovebird myself so never found out first hand... good luck!

I had a customer in yesterday inquiring about a 3 yr old Senegal we have. One of their questions was at 3 is the bird set in it's ways? I've heard macaws get kind of set when they hit 7+ yrs and was wondering if this happens to the Senegals.
