Hi everyone….As you know I have posted in the past about the Parrots at Play Calendar program….I just thought I would share some info with you all…since some of you have bought the calendar, and because of you, we have been able to donate $2310.00 to organizations of YOUR choice!!!!! I am very proud to be associated with this program, and I hope those of you that are not familiar with it will take the time to read the link I’ve attached, and I hope EVERYONE gets involved with the photo contest that will begin in February. This contest is FREE, and everyone is WELCOME to send their birds pictures in.
Now I am not a judge, and a new panel of Judges are picked each year. However, I do get to see the entries. Even thought I do not know who submitted the photo(because that is kept confidential till the winners are announced) and I am so thrilled to actually be able to recognize a parrot because of all the emails and pictures we have shared. Each year a different poster parrot is chosen. I am very proud to have had my boy Sampson Bell, a beautiful Congo African Grey, to grace the cover as the very first poster parrot (2004) for this wonderful Calendar. The first Theme of the Calendar was to raise awareness for Aspergillosis. My Sampson Bell lost his battle with the horrible disease on December 7, 2002….however it still feels like yesterday. :icon_cry: The Second poster parrot that was chosen was Indy. The program wanted to raise awareness to adoptions and rescues in 2005. Indy is a Severe Macaw that was rescued in 2002 at the age of 13 by Iowa Parrot Rescue from humans that maintained him in a small 18" X 18" cage with no toys, only one over-sized dowel perch, second-hand smoke and junk food. After getting him back to Iowa, Mike and Abi gave him repeated baths and the water that ran off was brown. Vet visit showed anemia and vitamin deficiencies, as well as severe upper respiratory problems. During the next 60 days the vet bills climbed to over $1,000. Indy required irrigation of the sinuses several times a day and needed supplements and antibiotics. He also needed a lot of socialization. It wasn't until March of 2003 that he was ready for adoption. Indy is now in the hands of caregivers that are feeding him good food, giving him lots of love and a quality of life. :eusa_clap Both Sampson Bell’s and Indy’s stories can be found on the Parrots at Play web site. The theme for the Poster Parrot for the 2006 calendar is longevity. The 2006 cover will feature Cookie, a Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo, who has lived at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois since it opened in 1934. Yup, that’s right, Cookie is over 70 years old! His job on the cover will be to educate the public about the potential life span of parrots. While the theme of the Calendar is longevity, the theme for the photo contest is “parrots at play” and will always be “parrots at play”. The Poster Parrot is an educational feature that will change each year. The 2006 calendar will also have a new feature called Parrotrivia which will be designed to educate the public about various aspects of parrots. It is currently under development and if you have any suggestions for this section we welcome your input. Parrotrivia will be in a question and answer format. For example: What are two physical characteristics that distinguish parrots from other types of birds? (I’m sure you all know the answer, but I’ll bet most of the general public wouldn’t) We are pleased to report the fund raising results thus far: 492 calendars were shipped to non-profits for direct sale with a potential fund raising amount of $4,920!! Donations disbursed since Sep, 2004 amount to $2,310!! :eusa_danc We still have 2005 calendars in stock and are still receiving orders almost daily. The photo contest for the 2006 calendar begins Feb 1st and we will be sending in a press release soon to Bird Talk to announce the contest. I will be posting links once the contest opens for you to submit your pictures. I ask everyone to cross post this on EVERY site you may visit. The more that know about this, the more we can donate to help our feathered friends…. :eusa_pray http://www.parrots-at-play.org
