Household bird danger question

I had my floors re-finished 10 days ago, using a urethane, oil-based finish. I can still smell an odor from them. Does anyone know if the finish is dangerous to parrots? Thanks.

I heard the rule is that if you can smell it, it's bad, but I am not sure about that exact product.

i wouldn't expose my birds to those fumes... air out the house real well before bringing them back into it

^ I agree! If you can smell it is probably not good for them. I would remove them and air out the house. Better safe then sorry imo.

Oh yes! It's one of the worst things for them. I had my floors refinished before I moved into my house, and waited a month after that to move in.

I'd definitely try to air out the area as much as possible, too, with fans - open a window if you can. And I'd keep the birds as far away from the area for as long as possible.

if you can smell it, it is still off gassing and may be dangerous to you as well.

VOC's

You bet it can kill them!

Volatile Organic Compounds - VOCs

http://www.epa.gov/iaq/voc.html

Birds can be overly sensitive to paint fumes. The compound in paint that produces smell is called Volatile Organic Compounds or the "VOC" levels. The above EPA Web Site best describes what these compounds are.
