Exclamation Cecil Is Sick!!!

Cecil has something going on with him. I don't know what. I've called the avian vet and she called him in some antibiotics and my wife is on the way home with them.
Yesterday he was fine, singing being himself.
Today..he is very weak, closing his eyes, dry heaving without any results. Not saying anything. He IS drinking water. The only thing he ate today is a carrot a lil while ago. and he did clean his beak afterwards. But he bypassed everything else, his favorites: spaghetteo's, pnuts or pnut butter. His droppings look smaller, but green with a white streak. no blood, no solid matter at all, but he hasn't ate.
His feathers have a normal sheen, nothing from his nares, but he has some saliva in the bottom curve of his to beak that isn't normally there. HIs breathing isn't labored and is regular. He can balance on one foot while he ate the carrot, but is less steady than normal. He doesn't "beg" like he normally does and is content to just be petted relentless. Usually after he "lets" you pet him a sec, he's done with it. He grunts a lil when I talk to him down next to his face.
There's my avain assessment.
The plan is to: gulp...I gotta give this bird some antibiotics in a syringe. This is the same bird who nearly sent me to er with stitches. But, he's weak, so if I towel him gently, it should be a problem.
If he's better in the am, the owners said to not carry him to the vet. were he MINE, I would and I might anyway. Just cause I want to.
The owners are on their way back and did seem concerened about him. I wont' sleep much tonite. I'll get up and check on him.
This ain't fun...
Mark

Keep him warm. Set up a hospital cage and keep him about 85 degrees, I would seek a vet. For blood work to see what is up. Please dont wait. Are you sure he is dry heaving, bird do not generaly throw up. I wonder if he is regurgitating. That is something they do when they are hormonal or smitten with some one. Also called love Barf. I would not give an antibiotic without seeing, not calling a vet. Antibiotics can do more harm than good if not needed.

Oh Mark -- what a nightmare! I know how hard it will be to give Cecil back to his "real" family and it will be even more difficult if he is under the weather and they aren't ready to spoil him as much as we all would. Take him to the vet -- unless he is feeling much much better. You have made such progress with him (at the cost of some flesh)! Hope you both get some sleep tonight & you wake up to a happy healthy Cecil!

Thanks folks. I got the antibiotic in, he did eat 1/2 of a carrot afterward and drank a LOT of water. he grunted awhile. I know the ab didn't work that quick. (I'm an RN) It may have just been timing. But I bedded him down for the nite. He cleaned his beak and appeared better, but weak.
The kids are really worried about him too. The wife, even tho he despises her existance, is worried. Funny how you get attached.
Yes, we will miss him a LOT.
The owners told me tonite to just stop feeding him extra food. (I wasn't anyway with him sick, except for the carrot he's been NPO, well..NPB)
They said that he'll go back to 100 percent pellets when he gets home. NO more Lilo and Stitch, no more working out with me on the treamill on Sat ams. They love him, really, but just don't interact with him like we have.
I told them about him "begging" when he squats and quivers and they didn't know that.
Oh well.....I will miss him, but I"ve got some great memories and he's paved the way for Eddie this summer.
Thanks for everybody's support round here. Good place to be.
Mark...

Hi,

Please keep the little guy warm 85 degrees (suggested above also) and see that he drinks. If you feel he has been around anything toxic like zinc, lead, plants, cleaners, etc. get him to the vet right away. The best product I have read about or seen work on toxins in the body is aloe-detox, it helps eliminate toxins from the liver and kidneys. What kind of antibiotic did the vet prescribe?

Keep us posted.

Cecil Update

Ok, update;
Essentially he is unchanged. But he is not worse.
I got up at 3 am to check on him and he was just sitting on the bottom of the cage by the waterbowl, he was drinking but just sitting there upright and looking pitiful..well, it was 3 am.
I checked back at 4, 5, got up at 6, no changes.
Took him onto the avian vet when they opened and the vet was extremely concerned. He regurged there a couple of times, his wings were droopy, but he did sit on a perch. His eyes closed some. He looked so bad. I've never had a bird go bad. I'm really bothered by it and it's on my mind today at work. I feel like such a wuss worryin bout him, but..I do.
I called to check on my "step-bird" haha, thas what I call him now. His owners will be back in town tomorrow. I've updated them.
They are giving him fluids subq, drawing profiles and running cultures on sputum/stool samples.
So, thanks for all your concerns. I hope he gets better soon. He has just been so full of life and pride to look so humble with his eyes closed and droopy wings. jeez. I hope I didn't do anything wrong. I fed him what the owners said, mostly table food, no chocolate or pitted fruits. I gave him daily vegs and fruits, fresh water, maybe one unshelled peanut a day, a small one. He loved cracking those open. His eyes just went crazy mad when he heard the peanut bag.
I dunno what else I coulda done...Maybe he knew the time was coming for him to leave us and go back home? No more treats and Lilo and STitch?
Dunno.
Thanks,
Mark

Don't blame yourself! Will keep good thoughts for Cecil -- fingers and toes crossed.
