Heated Pearch

Does anyone use a heated pearch? We keep our house on the cool side and Merlin sits and shivers all the time.
I have also attached a picture of Merlin with his new toy, a bell. He gets very excited ringing this bell. You can tell by his eyes.
Thanks

I have a heated perch for each of my three birds. I absolutely love them, well... they absolutely love them. (Here's "their" review of them - http://birdtested.com/2007/01/k-thermo-perch.html).

Merlin is absolutely beautiful!! (I like the bright wall behind him, too. It really makes him stand out!)

heated perch

Cute picture! Wish I would have read your post before I ordered the heated perch for Merlin. I got him the med. size. I hope it won't be a problem for him to stand on.

It'll probably be just fine for him!
My maxi pi has a medium size one, and it's perfect for him.

I've been thinking about getting this too, because my yellow collared has arthritic feet and the vet recommended it.l But now I live in sunny San Jose so it's not as cold as Denver. But RE: Shivering. I doubt your bird is cold. When my Hahn's flew away in February and spent the night outdoors (the next morning there was frost on the ground from temp dropping to 31), Icalled the vet to get more info. He said parrots (and your amazon comes from the same area as my macaws) are fine to 40 degrees, and to 30 for short periods of time. But give me the update on the heated perch, I"m still kicking the thought of buying one around.

As good as they can be for cold or elderly birds, also keep in mind the room for them to go wrong. Just like I never stop checking my fish tank heaters for faults, I wouldn't stop checking these for faults either. The last thing you want is your bird getting burnt tootsies!

I have a heated perch in each cage for my birds! In Minnesota it can get really cold in the winter, so we thought that a heated perch would help out, and it does! They love it! And I put it in a place where they like to sleep, so they're warm all night.

heated perch cords

Aren't you worried that your bird will bite through the cord for the heated perch?
Do they have a thermostat? Are they transfomed down to low voltage at the plug?

Heated perches are designed with a metal sleeve that holds the wire out and away from the cage, so there is really no worry about them being bitten. As far as the perch itself, last year I was discussing these perches with a Macaw owner. I was told that even with hard bites the perch shows no sign of damage.
They do use a low watt, 12-volt system for heating.
Also, they state that the perches are thermostatically controlled, but it's probably by a simple resistor in the circuit.
Here's a link to the manufacturer's web site that will show you how the wire is protected and give you more information about the perch. Here's the link: http://www.khmfg.com/products/heatedBirdPerch.htm

I haven't really looked at them, but I know of someone on another board whose bird was out his cage and chewed the cord, so not sure how much of the wire the sleeve covers? I am assuming it isn't safe for a bird that is all over the outside of thier cages?
