How/where to report unsanitary bird store

I just visited a bird store in north NJ and was horrified at the conditions. Many macaws plucked, filthy cages covered in feces, filthy water cups. Cages way too small for the breeds. I was nauseous when I left the store. Who do I contact- local health dept? animal control? state health dept? Any help would be appreciated as I can't stand to see a place like this stay in business even one more day!!!

I know your probably mean well.....

Please do not mention any store name, likeness or exact location. As this site will not tolerate comments about 3rd party businesses that could possibly be considered slander from who ever. This a site wide policy and is not directed at you but just to make it known. As we have had past situations that lead to a game of ones word against anothers and we just don't tolerate it . Thus the site wide policy.

As far as answer goes your best bet would to call animal control services and they would point youin further direction you would need to go (call).

I hope that you are able to do something to help the animals. I think calling animal control sounds like a good idea.

I wouldn't mention any names - just looking for guidance. Situations like this appear on TV in relation to dogs/cats but I had never seen a story about birds. These were conditions that no bird lover would want to see continue. I didn't know if others had dealt with this before. I know this is an international message board and felt there would be others out there who could help in general and not this specific situation

Call the local news stations maybe they'll do a story about it. Nothing gets results like bad press, just ask Don Imus.

Contact rescue groups in the area and let them know about the poor conditions. Also, put in a complaint to animal control or your local SPCA.

GoingMobile had a great suggestion - media coverage would spotlight the store and produce good results.

I got in touch w. local health dept- they were shocked by the conditions I described. They said it was in their jurisdiction and would follow up. They wanted my phone number so the inspector could talk to me but one look will confirm it. I'm going to wait one week and revisit. If things are not remarkably better I'll get in touch w. local paper or tv station.
