Exclamation spoilt sun conure

Hey guys,

I am new to this site and I am happy I found it! I have a sun conure that is about 5 months old. He seems a bit spoilt though, when he wants food he screams for it. How can correct this? Another thing that I wanted to know is when will all his colours come in? I heard that he sun conures are supposed to turn yellow after a while but at the moment he is green and orange. Does anyone know when his full colours will come in?

He shall get his full colors when he molts... which could be any time between now and a year old.

As for screaming for food... well I will be honest and say that he should have food available to him at all times... in one form or another.. whether that be seeds, pellets, or fresh foods.

well, we always have seeds and water in the cage however what he screams for are treats like green apples etc. once he gets it he is fine.

I keep pellets in Pitas cage all the time, and he usually has another bowl with treats, nuts, dried fruit, etc etc.....everymorning I put his food bowl in the cage with fresh food...scrambled eggs, vegies, fruit...etc etc. I take the food bowl out at night, but keep the other 2 in all the time. He even has a bowl in his sleep cage with water.

As for his colors....like Monica said...anytime between now & a year. Pita just turned a year, and he is at his most yellow now.

Please post some pics of your baby.

I bet when he screams for food or for any other reason you run right over to his cage! He is screaming for attention and that is exactly what you are giving him. When he screams don't even look at him, leave the room when he quiets down you may than return and pick him up telling him what a good bird he is. Birds do not respond to negative reinforcement so when being naughty you ignore when being good you praise! Hope this helps.

Exactly right.

Too much seed is not good for your bird. His diet should be mostly fresh veggies and fruit with pellets rather than seed. He may not have all his color till 2 as it seems to depend on the genetics of his parents and the season he hatches in as to how soon he will be mostly yellow and orange. I have attached a pic of a spotty sun, about 6 or 7 months old.
