So Happy - reply from DougW's Wife :-)

I wanted to thank everyone for replying to us. We are thrilled about our New Baby! As Doug said, she is so gentle, sweet and those kisses are enough to make you melt!!!!!!!!

I can *honestly* say that now I understand how a bird can choose a human. I was SO chosen yesterday. I have NEVER had an experience like that with any animal. I felt so calm, so at peace and this bond was very natural. It was amazing. I made the call to Doug to say "he/she is the ONE"! I placed the deposit and as soon as her cage arrives home she is OURS!

You have to all understand I have been very leary of the Big Macaws with their beaks. They made me a bit nervous. I never really wanted a Greenwing as I was a tad overwhelmed by their size. I am SO glad this gent in the store made me hold her and experience their gentle way. It was the first time I didn't have sweaty palms and was completely calm - so strange. I just knew after holding this gentle giant for over an hour that was IT!

We will be going up today to spend more time with her/him.

To Outlaw - your post states you are located in Central Maryland....are you near Ocean Pines MD? That is where my parents live and we frequent ALOT in the summer. Let us know.

Thank you all again for your wonderful replies! We will be posting pics of our baby real soon and of course give updates frequent - YIPEE!

Smile Just an update

Our baby GreenWing is doing great! My wife went up to visit with her this afternoon and she was pacing back and forth as soon as she got view of her. The baby wanted OUT!

As soon as Carol opened the door our baby had her foot up ready to step up. She is such a little lover. Gives kisses all the time and is just a sweetie.

We are hoping the cage comes in by Tuesday of next week. We are bunkering down for a Major Snowstorm tomorrow and Sunday. Cross your fingers that this cage comes, we want our Baby HOME! We fell AWFUL leaving her in the store.

I went up tonight and spent time with her. She was just awesome! What a gentle and sweet disposition.

We are creating a Bird Aviary for Piper (our Hahn's) and our newest addition. It will be a Tropical Paradise Theme for the birds. We will post pictures when done.

Thank you all for your posts. Carol and I truly appreciate them.

Doug and Wildirish Rose:

Make sure that you don't leave the store without some baby macaw feeding formula and a large feeding syringe. Baby birds will often revert to handfeeding when they first come home. That even goes for babies that have been eating on their own for a month. It happened to me and I wasn't prepared. Better to be safe than sorry. Have the bird handler show you how to handfeed, too. Its not hard, but if done improperly, you can get into big trouble.

Once the container is opened, YOU MUST KEEP IT REFRIGERATED. I have a canister in my freezer cause you just never know when you'll need it, and the macaw formula can be difficult to find. With the winter storms lining up on the east coast, we could be in for weeks of this stuff. Once you mix the formula, you cannot reuse it. It must be thrown out.

I don't live near Ocean Pines. Its about 3 hours from here. I'm between Annapolis and Glen Burnie on the other side of the Chesapeake Bay. If you ever get up this way, give me a call and stop in.

Thank you Outlaw

For Outlaw:

This is "Carol" under Doug's User Name.

I have a quick question for you. Do you B&G's sleep on their perch, or do you hang anything for them.

Our Hahn's loves her Happy Hut. She sleeps in it every night and it gives her a chance to be off her feet :icon_smil

I know that they do not make a Happy Hut big enough for a GreenWing, but do you have any suggestions? Or perhaps our Big Friends do not need this type of aparatus?

Also, we will be handfeeding our Baby. She is being weened to once a day. Doug and I will alternate days to bond.

I am sure we will have lots of questions for you.

Thank you so much for your information. It is greatly appreciated. When we head down to MD this summer, we will let you know.

Carol:

No, the big macaws don't need anything to sleep in and in fact, that can even get you into trouble. You see, once they hover around 5 they start maturing and start looking for dark places to nest. If you have a female, that can start egg laying and can be very difficult to stop. It can deplete the hen's of much needed calcium..

Make sure that you are sent home with MACAW handfeeding formula, for the macaws have a higher protein need than other species. I like Kaytee Exact Macaw formula. It mixes well and my baby did great on it.

Your Hahns and your GW will have absolutely nothing in common whatsoever. Your GW will act like a macaw, will be very dependent and need lots of snuggling. He is afer all a baby. Hahns tend to act more like conures and frankly they pretty much are conures. All of the macaws are cousins to conures.

Be gentle and meet your baby's needs and you will have the most devoted and wonderful companion you could possibly imagine. Just look around and see how very few GWs ever wind up in shelters. They are THAT special.
