I am not interested in macaws - I'm not intimidated by them at all, but they just don't do it for me. And their tails are just way too long I'm a small to medium sized bird kind of person, and one of the reasons being that I will keep all of my current and future birds flighted. I know of many who have larger birds flighted within their home, but I like the idea of a smaller bird being able to easily fly around and have a great room/house size to bird size ratio. When my birds are out they have access to the majority of the house and, therefore, they can really fly with gusto and get a great workout.

I also wouldnt want to own a cique(sp?). The breeder we go to has them and a rehomecd cockatoo there makes half as much noise as them. Its horriable and they gave a girl a very very nasty bite.

A Moluccan Cockatoo. I spent a summer in a room while Bella was being weaned with one. He was a wonderful guy in his own right but WOW was he LOUD.

My Bird(s) Own Me!

I think I can honestly say that there isn't any species I would NEVER own.

I have, throughout my love of birds, sworn that I wouldn't own a cockatiel, amazon, grey or moluccan.

Yet, there are exceptions to everything. I've met maybe two amazons that I would take in a HEART BEAT if they needed a home! I am owned by a cockatiel, who I adore-I got her by chance, and didn't plan on keeping her. I've been won over by greys, and I've met some wonderfully predictable, semi-quiet moluccans.

I also wasn't interested in macaws when I first got into birds...now one of my dream birds is a Greenwing...still not a blue and gold fan, but there are one or two out there who I could see myself with.

For me, I've decided that I will always pick my birds based upon their individual personalities, rather than their species. This said, I have a high noise tolerance after working with birds for 5 years...and I think I've started to lose my hearing from a couple close M2 screams!

Also, right now, I live in an apartment, so my selection is limited by size and noise...and a college student's budget! Plus I have to think about what changes will occur in my life, and whether that bird/species will adapt well to them.

OK...I did think of one species. I would never own a lory. I love them, but I know I couldn't deal with the shooting poop! And EVERYTHING becomes sticky! Regular bird poop is a mess enough!

Hard to say... I admire all the various parrot species for various reasons. And once you interact with more species, you find that you might like something you didn't before.

Amazons, for example... Oh, sure: I think it's great that they talk and sing (and often do both VERY well) but for the longest time I never thought much else about them. Then I discovered lilac-crowned Amazons, which I think are just amazing birds.

Macaws & Cockatoos... I love 'em (esp. the hyacinths and Moluccans) but I don't know if I can provide the proper home for one, esp. since I've been an apartment dweller for over a decade now with no change in sight ;)

Caiques... LOVE their energy and playfulness... and I think that they are easy on the eyes, too (particularly the black headed). That said, I think that they are a little two crazy for me, if that makes any sense.

And this might be surprising but cockatiels... I have this almost love/not love thing with 'tiels. I think that they are BEAUTIFUL little parrots with an understated yet entertaining personality. I think that they make for wonderful companions. I've had many positive experiences with 'tiels and I have considered bringing one into my life. That said, they don't do much for me, if that makes any sense. Like I don't get that heart-stopping feeling that I do when I see lovebirds or a Senegal.

Molly (post above) did put it best. Sometimes you decide on a new feathered companion by the species that picks YOU. I'd likely not turn away from a deserving 'tiel if I felt a connection with one... although I would have to say no to a 'too given my current living situation, no matter what.

Probably a too....it would be because of the dust issues and my allergies and asthma.
I have had an U2, M2, Lesser sulfer, and a Triton.
They all ended up with relatives because I was a sneezing mess.

Im not interested in owning most amazons, the only one i would would be a lilac crown but even then i would rather a macaw instead...im not interested in owning budgies, lovebirds and lorikeets..or ibis's lol or sun conures. I would probably maybe like a grey but they are not too close to the top of birds i want either. However if i was offered these birds i wouldnt say no but i am not fussed on buying one. Oh and an Indian ringneck...still if i was given one i wouldnt say no.

For me I am not interested in owning a Macaw and never see myself having one - don't get me wrong, I love them and used to birdie sit for one, but they are just not for me. They are to large of a bird for me and require more space then I could probably give them. Needless to say - they are just not my type of bird.

Probably an Amazon because I have never met one yet that didn't seem to want to kill me. It is a weird thing.

Hehehe. . . Sounds like you've been properly introduced to the Hot 3

I felt the same way because the most popular ones here (and I believe it's because how adamant they are about breeding) are the DYH, the BFA, and the YNA. And those are the most aggressive birds I've ever met!!!

After I gave the other Amazon species a chance, though, it's hard to not get attached. They're cute little clowns who do a wonderful job of entertaining themselves. And I'm still saying that if I find an MRH or Lilac-Crowned at the right price. . . which may happen considering how close I am with a seller who has 3 MRHs. . . .she/he is coming home with me And that is VERY different than how I felt two years ago.

WHy does everyone fall in love with the Lilac-Crowned Zon? I mean, I did, so did several other people on this board. . .what is it about those pretty lavender heads?
