How to tell a good breeder and questions to ask?

Hi,

I will be getting a hand reared cockatiel from a breeder and I was wondering what questions I should ask the breeder? And what should I look out for in a breeder - warning signs, things that show a good breeder?

I will be visiting next week to see the chicks and have a look around (The chicks won't be ready to take home for another 5 - 6 weeks) and I'd just like to make sure the breeder is a good one. I've only ever bought birds from pet shops and now I know better, I'd like to make the right choice.

I've emailed back and forth with the breeder, asking questions and she seems really nice and knowledgeable. Unfortunately there aren't much breeders in my area so I'm hoping she's good!

Thank You!

You could always ask for references. That way you could talk to some of the people the breeder has sold to. When I went to the breeders house for the first time I was very pleased. Her & her husband were very nice. They told me I could stop by anytime to visit with my baby (he was still handfeeding). All the birds looked great. I could tell they really cared about their birds. I've got my first lot of handraised 'tiels going through atm. I have an information sheet written up with cage requirements, diet, toys and health. My babies will go with this and a baby pack that has a couple of toys, links to forums/sites for information etc. avian vet phone numbers and for the new parront to ring me if they have any concerns.
As for what to look at...are things clean, ie cages, fresh water, food. Are the babies interested in you and their surroundings. Are the babies weaned and how long have they been weaned for. How have they been socialised. Can you see the parents.
That's off the top of my head and is information I'd be giving out.

Most breeders won't let you see their breeders, Because you could bring a disease with you from your clothes.
I would look for cleansiness, Knowledge, Friendlyness, do the birds look healthy ? Does the breeder take time or rush you ? ask for references is a great suggestion. If they try to sell it unweened DONT buy it.
