scared me bad!!!!

I just got home from the emergency room with Sophie. I was so scared she was hurt worse then she is. I was working on lowering the poop tray on her cage so she can't reach it threw the grates on the bottom of her cage.
I put her on top of the cage and went over to get the supports I made. When I turned around it surprised her or something. She did her usual stomping thing and fell off the top of the cage!!! She hit the ground hard. Face and chest first. It dazed her so bad she opened her wings like a hurt bird does and flapped/flopped around and tried to run. Only time I've ever seen that was a bird that was dieing after hitting a window!! I finally got to her and held her close so she would calm down. She could have ripped my nose off and I would not have cared right then.
I took a couple breaths and I could see she wasn't doing well at all. Real unstable. I turned a couple circles and figured where the vets number was and called.
By this time I could see her beak was bleeding a little. Sophie crawled up on my shoulder. She only does that if she is scared............ called my wife and she couldn't leave work to bring me the car. So I hi jacked the dump truck here where I work and hit the road.
Sophie sat on my shoulder the whole way. Her eyes were looking a much better so I was feeling a lot less hopeless by now.
The office had not had to use their acrylic beak repair kit for 5 years so it was all dried up. They used some tissue glue to keep it together. The crack is where the lower beak meets the upper. She really did go face first into the ground. I feel like crap!!! Her stool is alright. She also got a clean bill of health for her annual check up which was going to be Saturday. The beak seems to be all that was wrong.
Sophie has to take meloxicam and cefa. I think I am calming down now. I have lowered all the perches in Sophie's cage and as soon as I put her in her cage guess what she does? Climbs to the top!!! It hurt so she didn't stay. I hope she eats. I have extra mashed her mash. The vet gave me a syringe to feed her with if I need to go get baby food. Suggestions to make this as easy as possible for all of us?
Jim

Aw, poor Sophie. I don't have any suggestions, but just wanted to wish Sophie a quick recovery and give her birdie kisses from Skye, Meadow and Paulie.

Poor thing! That would freak me out, too. Tucci can glide pretty well even though he's big and heavy, but he's had a few falls of the kitchen table when he goes too close to the edge. I didn't realize they could hurt themselves so badly with a fall! I'm glad all is mostly well and I hope she heals quickly.

Very awful... poor thing. That has got to hurt...

I had a similar episode. Since cyp was in shock they gave a vitamin K shot... so i would suggest that feeding anything high in that will help smooth her over.

My vet also suggested putting my guy in aquarium for a couple of weeks. Forcing him not to perch and therefore can't fall again. or hit it while climbing. I tried it just did not work. But that was him. Maybe your girl would accept it.

I fed baby foods for awhile after that too. already mushy stuff. And concocted a "paper" spoon. The metal of the utensils would hurt him if he hit it the wrong way....

He healed quickly. and none the worse for wear. I almost lost my guy too. He didn't present readily, and hours later i found him in that position. Scared the you know what out of me...

I'm very sorry to hear of and see Sophie's injury. I wish her a quick and problem-free return to her previous healthy self.
After Pepper had a couple of falls from the top of his cage, I now give him a mimimum wing clip so that he can flap to safety.
Good luck to Sophie's health.

Sophie is clipped but she can usually get in a good 10 to 20 yard glide when outside. She fell the 6 feet like a rock. Her wings didn't even get out until just before she hit the ground

Poor baby! Hope she feels better soon. I jumped off a rock about six inches high once and had 37 stitches in my chin -- I can imagine how embarassed she must be. Hopefully her siblings won't make fun of her!

Buck falls like that. It scares me when ever he does that. Hope she's well...
