Does Size Matter ?

When I look at the coloring and markings of budgies I am blown away.I can't help but wonder what it would be like if some of the smaller birds came supersized. Would they be on more people's "what bird are you dying to have" list? Are you more impressed with a big bird because of it's more substantial size? What if an African Grey came in parrotlet size? Would you be less enthralled?

In the past I have had parakeets, a cherry masked conure, and I currently have a DYH Amazon and 2 macaws. The macaws are by far my most favorite. I don't think it is size. Certainly the size of a macaw is an major inconvenience in terms of cage, and even traveling with them. And, also keep in my that both of my macaws are young, but for me it is the relationship I have with them. My conure was cool, but much more independent. The parakeets were definitely more independent. The Amazon is unfortunately just not a nice bird. The macaws would crawl under our skin if they could. They are funny, playful, needy, cuddling, demanding of our attention, and destructive if not properly supervised. But, then again...I have 6 weimaraners (a breed with a reputation of being emotional cripples, needy, have to be with you, etc...)

I often times think that I would be happier with my gray if she was more the size of my senegals or even smaller. I love her but she is a real hand full.

I like them small and small birds fit my lifestyle. I'm an apartment dweller. Nothing against bigger birds tho, they are fabulous and lovely as well. I couldn't be happier with my cockatiel. She's awesome, cuddly, smart, funny..... and the added advantage is that if there is any biting behavior, I have less of a chance of getting seriously hurt. I only just found out parrotlets exist and I'm rather enamored of them now. Little size, big personality.

To answer your question. If African Grey was the size of a parrotlet, it would be on my wish list for sure. I love AG's personalities, but I don't care for big parrots size-wise.

I also wish budgies had short tail and were a bit larger, parrotlet/lovebird size.

Hmmm... Imagining a macaw sized English Budgie with a huge fluffy forehead! They would be VERY popular because they are such good mimmickers and such pretty colours!

Yes, I think it's more personality than size. Seems like the bigger birds talk more and have different personalities. Though conures sure have quite the personality.

I don't think that too many people give the small birds a chance. Both of my budgies talk and one has a HUGE vocabulary - that accompanied by their massive amounts of energy and exuberance makes for fun times every single day. Talking has nothing to do with them being better birds but sometimes I hear people saying that, "The bigger the bird the better the talking ability." That's a load of rubbish as the parrot in the Guiness Book of World Records for largest vocabulary is a budgie. Now that I've witnessed how much fun budgies are, I can't see myself without them in the future. Some people with larger birds have perch potatoes and they see my birds zipping here and there on my videos and they've told me, "WOW, they're so energetic!" Yep they are - and FUN.
