Covering and moving cage

Hi all,

I cover my Sun Conures cage with a white sheet. Is this ok or should it be a a hevier material like a blanket?

Also, from time to time I have to move her cage from the living room to my bedroom because she doesn't like the TV on at night when the lights are off. Then when I go to bed I move it back again. Should I just leave it in the living room until she gets use to the TV being on without being afraid. When I turn the lights off and the TV is the only thing on she will climb to the highest corner of her cage. As soon as I turn a light on she is fine.

That's a wrap... ~Scott

A sheet should be fine. Some of my birds get covered (mostly the budgies and finches to quiet them down), most do not. Mine all live in the great room with the TV; they may make noise to "outshout" it (poor neighbors), but don't seem to be afraid of it. They do have a night light, so are never in total darkness. It doesn't hurt to move her cage, but I think she could learn to get used to the TV, too. Do you ever hold her/play with her while you are watching TV in a dark room?

I did hold her last night, well, tried to but all she wanted to do was run up as far behind my neck as possible. This is my 3rd night with her (or him) and she is still getting use to me so I don't know if she is running to hide behind my neck from me or the TV. Time will tell huh. Thanks for the reply.

I cover all of my birds at night with dark sheets because they are in an area where the living lights and tv would shine light in their cages. Once they are covered they settle right down and there isn't a problem with them getting upset about the light.

I cover my birds with a large heavy white banquet tablecloth. They are also in the LR with the TV on. I do switch from overhead lights to a lamp on the other side of the room. They just settle down and go to sleep-I've peeked.

I think that they get more rest with a very dark cover. I would leave the cage in the living room, or take it to the bedroom and leave it until morning. I think you should leave them alone as much as possible for sleep. Two of mine are in the living room also. Lukey has a Cozy Cover which completely covers her cage and she seems to get a better sleep than Whiteboy. He has a dark sheet that only goes halfway down. It also has about 8 windows that he made by chewing it. I'm trying to get to a fabric store to buy some dark denim. You have inspired me to try for today. Poor Whiteboy.

i cover mine with large beach towels, some of the folks here, provide a smaller "sleeping" cage in the other room with water. moveing just the bird to the other room is easier than a whole cage. i am planing on doing this with my birds. sleep is very important to birds, and their whole personality, and health, depends on long, uninterupted rest.

I don't cover mine. Romeo & Bonita were never covered at the breeders house. I tried once with Bonita & she freaked out on me so I never tried again. Crystal

Going up to the highest spot is only natural for a sleeping bird.... and it may also be a way for a bird to cuddle up to you... if there is noise or light, birds may come down to investigate....

You may want to invest in a second cage (tiel size or about 2' sq) or a carrier to use as a 'sleep cage' in a quiet room.
