Bar Spacing for Poicephalus
Hello all,
Right now i'm looking for one large cage for all of my poi's, because apparently an indoor aviary won't work for us. Currently i have three cages that are around 24x24x24, but each individual cage takes a lot of time to clean. So I was thinking that i could buy one large cage for them all to live in, because they all get along. The cage i'm looking at has 1" bar spacing, but i'm thinking that might be a little too big for a poicephalus. Would that be okay? Here is a picture and the dimensions of the cage. ![]() *1" Bar Spacing. *Inside Height 45" *5mm bar gauge. *Durable, non-toxic, powder coated paint finish. *Horizontal side bars, Vertical bars front & back. *Front door safety latch. *4 swing out feeder doors. *Breeder Door. *6 stainless steel bowls and 3 perches. *Locking food bowls. *Built-in seed catcher (add 4" all around). *Large front door for easy access. *Slide-out grill & tray for easy cleaning. *4 easy rolling casters. *Knocks down for compact storage. What do you all think?

Getting along outside of a cage does not guarantee that they will get along when contained together in one cage. They might, but they might not.
What types of Poicephalus do you have? * * See bottom * * For the smaller Poi's, the Meyer's Red-Bellied, Brown-Headed and Senegals, I'd recommend bar spacing of 1/2" to 3/4". For Capes and Jardines, the wider, 1" bar spacing would be OK. I don't believe the size of the cage you are considering is large enough. You don't say the width or depth, but for a single Senegal I have a cage that's internal height is 41", it's 21" deep and 30" wide. He uses every inch of that space, from the grate on the bottom to the top of the dome. I'd recommend you consider a larger cage. Good luck in finding the best caging option for your Poi's. * * Sorry, after writing this post I just saw your signature and images showing your Poi's. The same cage looks cheaper here...
Bird Cages, Playstands, Avian Supplies - HQ CAGES Or a similar one MACAW PLAY TOP 40"X30"48" POWDER COATED - PLAY TOP CAGES by Bird Paradise Or even a tad higher... bar space 5/8" Centurion Aviaries & Cage Co. & Century Mutations The cage showed above is 40" X 30" X 75", where as the one in the first link says it's 40" X 30" X 72"... It's hard to say if the 1" bar spacing would be an issue or not however.... it might.... don't really have anything to add to Peppers Pa's post otherwise...

thanks for the replies. Actually, they do get along inside a cage together. They lived together in a tiny cage for a week while things were getting moved around, and Aree and Indy have lived in the same cage before for even longer periods of time.
i cant find any bigger cages. i'll keep looking though.

I love that last cage you showed. I bet they'd like that one. That is, if you really think they won't kill each other in there. Lukey is so mean to everyone else, that she could never be caged with anyone. I wish I had bought Lukey one as big as Whiteboy's when I see her playing around in it while he's not looking. Whiteboy's is 40" wide about 6' tall, but it has 1" bar spacing. I'm afraid she might get her head caught. They both have dome tops that open up too. Luke's is only 32" wide.

Well, as it turns out we're going to have a stainless steel cage built custom made for us. Thanks for your suggestions though!

Making a custom stainless steel cage sounds great. Pepper's in a Featherland stainless steel cage (Click here to see the cage) and I love how easy it is to clean, but I would have loved the chance to have a custom sized cage made for him. Please share images of your cage when you get it.
