No, they are 2 completely different chains. I agree the Petsmart near me is outstanding, and I have told them so. They only carry Canaries, Budgies, Finches and some Doves, and they all are clean and well fed. They have tons of toys, fresh fruit & vegies, and they are not clipped so they can free fly in thier habitates.

Again, I can't speak for all Petco's, but the one I worked at is terrible, and it breaks my heart. I have already called and voiced my concerns. Apparently the DM has already talked to the manager, but all this new stuff should not be happening at all.

After reading up on some SPCA and animal rights websites, apparently Petco has been 'ticketed' multiple times for doing this same thing. Unfortunatly, as long as they are giving the animals food and water, there isn't anything they can do. Yes, if there was evidence they were dening them fresh water (which I'm sure they are as the water always looks disgusting) then they could fine them, but usually there isn't very much that can be done... Sadly, stores like this can slide past the rules because they are a chain and can get away with it.

The best thing we can do is keep the heat on. If you feel that the birds are not being taken good care of, talk to the manager about it. If he/she doesn't do anything, call your SPCA. Other than that, it will be hard to get them to stop selling birds or at least start taking good care of them.

THe Petsmart by me isn't terrible, but it isn't the best either. They have one large bird, last it was a too. It is kept in a part plexi glass with bars on the side enclosure with a perch that is attached to the floor. The food and water bowls are on the floor are well. However, it is always clean and is in a big area with a few toys. The keets and teils are usually kept in something similar but much smaller and they sometimes have medium to smaller sized parrots.

Back to Petco- I think the only reason they are not completly shut down is because the good stores make up for the bad. Simple as that, but still sad.
