Question Replace toys?

Do you have to replace the toys if you get a new bird or just clean the ones from your old one real good? The previous bird was 4 months but had no tag or papers. I'm getting a baby (4 weeks) and will be handfeeding. I just cleaned the cage good, and the few toys. I should be ok, 'ay?

I would say it would depend on why you no longer have the other bird. If the bird was sold or given away and was in great health simple cleaning of toys, cage etc should be fine. If the previous bird passed away then it would be questionable. If it was an accidental death, injury etc basic cleaning would be fine. If from a previously sick bird the toys would need to be cleaned extremely well, disinfected etc and they might be okay but I would suggest discarding them and starting over with new ones.

I'm sorry - this may come off sounding harsh - but if you don't have the patience to work with the original bird you had for 2 weeks- you have no business buying an unweaned baby with the plans of handfeeding it yourself!! So much can go wrong - and quickly, resulting in injury and death to the bird. No good, honest breeder, who cares about the health and welfare of his babies would sell an unweaned bird to someone with little to no experience. Please rethink your decision. Do a google search for buying an unweaned parrot and read about what can happen.

i can only second that.... i'm pretty shocked actually that you're even considering this after not even having the patience to work with the original bird... a bird is not a paper towel - if one doesn't work, just toss it and get the next one... guess that's why so many are you there for adoption.

anyways - not my place to judge (though i'm allowed my own opinion)... however, if you're planning on handfeeding yourself, make sure to have a good vet by your side and/or a breeder with experience... handfeeding is not trivial and a lot can go wrong

I'm not sure about your bird experience, handfeeding by a inexperienced person in most cases can be a death sentence. JMHO

I know it would take more patience than I have--and most of my birds are rescues, many with checkered pasts, so you may want to rethink getting a little one. They are wonderful, but just like children, you never know how they will turn out or if all your efforts (inclulding sleep deprivation, a few bites, and a lot of frustration along the way) will have the results you desire.

I just saw your other thread, what happened to the other bird? Sun Conure, right?

Handrearing is NOT an easy thing to do and it is something you need to learn from an experienced breeder or avian vet. MANY things can go wrong and if you don't know what you are doing, you can kill the baby. You don't need to handfeed a bird to establish a bond with him, it is actually easier to bond with a newly weaned baby who is eating on his own.

That is why I brought the bird back. "HEALTH". The pet shop I bought it from said it was ok that it did not have a band on it's claw or the health records. After talking to several people I got concerned. After paying $350 for a bird that I don't know if it is sick or smuggled, then after getting bit and a mild infection I'd rather not take the risk. SOME of you may have done what I've done and others totally disagree. Everyone has their opinion, that's what makes us all unique.

Oh...and I will be going to the pet breeder 3x a day for at least a week before taking it home.

PS: You should have heard the guy's panic at the old pet shop when I told him I called the Department of Agriculture. It really sounded fishy. He then told me not to mention his store. And said he is giving this bird to his brother now. When I first got him NONE of the 3 conures in the cage had bands. Yesterday, the remaining 2 did have the bands.

That's a wrap.
