Today Alf (8 month old female Hahn's Macaw) figured out that a shower is not just a functional thing but a party all in itself. Up until now Alf has sat on the shower perch let me spray her, water off my shoulder, and put up with it and enjoyed our time together.
For some reason today she figured out that this was not only OK but Fun. No not just fun but
real fun. I have seen a lot of birds enjoy their baths but none like this one. I was in complete hysterics. I got to laughing so hard I thought I was going slip and fall. The more I laughed the wilder Alf got with her “rain dance”. Then she started to vocalize. I think she was trying to match my laughter. I have been working at her saying “I Love you” but she has been having a bit of trouble with it. In the midst of all this raucous squawking and talking out comes “I Love You”. I am not sure if she knows what she said but I know now that all the work has got it into her pretty little head. She already says “hello Alf” and “Oh Oh”.
When it was time to turn off the shower Alf gave me this look like I was the mean Ogre that was spoiling her fun. I put her on her play gym and she went straight for the water cup. I may have finished my shower but she was going to tack on a bath after hers. I just now got finished cleaning up the water from the floor under the gym..
It never ceases to amaze me the joy that our feathered friends can add to our lives. The chores and routines of keeping a bird can at times be a pain. But the rewards of sharing our lives with them never stop. The little things like one splashing, dancing, singing, squawking shower can make up for a years worth of changing newspapers and cleaning cages.
Ya got to love it.
