Red face rust on my cage!

I also have a cage that someone has given me...but I don't want to put my parakeet into yet because I haven't cleaned it. What is the best way to clean it? IT was also left outside for a short time but it has a little bit of rust on it. What can I do to clean it up? The cage is much bigger than what Sam is in now. I want to clean it up and get Sam a friend.

Renee

ps...sorry for all my questions in my last two posts. I want to learn as much as possible.

Even though the cage was given to you I still wouldn't use it. I've been googling around to try and find something that's a safe solution for removing rust and the only thing I can think of is taking a trash can, filling it with water, and dumping Oxyclean into it with the cage inside the water. As to how safe that is I have no clue, But afterwards I'd theorize that pulling it out, drying it entirely off and then scrubbing it down for 3 hours with soap (NOT Anti bacterial soap) water and vinager, drying it again and then leaving it sit three days by itself then would I let the bird play with it. But only I would go through such an insane effort to clean a bird cage.... maybe other people have suggestions but that's all I can come up with right now. Also, I have no clue if the Oxyclean would dissolve the paint off that cage. You're better off just buying a good sized one from ebay.

thanks tinna. i was really hoping i could use this cage...i guess it wouldn't be such a good idea. my husband said to repaint it...but i am not so sure now. I just don't have the money to buy a nice big cage like this one I was given.

Oh it's a big one? ...well, is it just painted or is that the coloring on the bars because if that oxy clean suggestion doesn't work you could try taking one of those wire scrubbers to it but I don't know if that'll rip the paint off.

Limeaway could do it too, there's a citrus brand out there that may be less noxious.

I bought a cage and saw it had some rust on it while cleaning. I used a rust remover, washed and scrubbed with water, then bleached it, washed and used white viegar. It was a long process! Make sure you rinse it really really well after using any cleaner. I wash mine several times to be sure.

If you could save up $100-$150, you could get a great sized flight cage! HQ, A&E, and Centurion Aviaries all sell these flight cages. Windy City Parrot, too.

If ya can, check out this thread...
