Well here we go again another wing clipping thread.

No thanks. I am adamantly opposed to wing clipping. IMO, in another 10 years when people better understand the birds in their care, and the responsibility THEY bear taking them in.....wing clipping will be looked upon the same way that the old practice of using a leg chain is now.

Wing clipping is going to make a bird needy, frustrated and unconfident. And worst of all physically weak and shortened in life span. It's also dangerous as they come crashing down or smash into walls or windows or break repeated blood feathers and other body parts in frustration trying to do normal physical activity that they don't understand was taken away from them.

There is no reason to clip a bird when you can easily bird proof the home. It's just a matter of priorities.

Why would anyone insist on taking away a natural part of a bird's physical and psychological makup, AND the ONLY true beneficial exercise of the cardio and muscles they were born to use?

People who never lived with flighted birds always think they know all these supposed "reasons" for why flighted birds are problematic. Nothing can be further from the truth. A flighted bird goes about his business and finds things to do rather than be tied to the cage top waiting for someone to come by 24/7. The only reason vets and breeders say to clip is because they know people are inheritently lazy and careless or shouldnt have a bird in the first place when they have chaotic homes. So the burden is off them, and put onto the bird instead of the caretaker....where it belongs.

And please, before you list all the alleged risks of flight, please read all the previous wing clip threads. Those allegations have all been addressed.

And by the way, NOBODY NEEDS TO BE CLIPPING BIRDS if they require a VIDEO! Spend the 10 bucks and go to a vet if you insist.

Thank you! I am sure many here will find this useful.
I keep my Zon and Too clipped for their own safety. I had let my Too be flighted until she smashed into a window about 3 times. I don't have wide open skies in my house and they can sure get their speed up quick. I am grateful she wasn't hurt bad. Learned my lesson!

Birds need to LEARN to fly it's not intuitive when they have been clipped or not fledged. Smash can mean alot of things. I bet it was a bump.

But covering windows and mirrors are normal precautions until the bird LEARNS how to fly. You can't just open the cage and let them go on their own. That's like putting a child in a go kart and saying, ok go drive it.

Nature didn't give animals or humans body parts that are unusuable, it's the humans that hobble the birds then the learning curve is greater.

daverose31: Thank you for the post!
It was an informative and fairly well done video.
Personally, I wouldn't let my birds have free unsupervised access to the rest of the house/apt,....
but as far as the clipping itself - the author demonstrated a great amount of care & consideration for her birds emotional well being both during and after the procedure.

Cindy215: I'm pretty sure the objective of this thread was NOT to spark another debate on the pros & cons of clipping.....
PLEASE, let's not let it degenerate into one.

Indeed, lets not make this into a debate. The video is a good reference for those people who may be interested in clipping their birds wings, but to those who are pro-flight, you can easily disregard this thread as to not create any arguments.
