Sad Questions

There was an accident at the vet today, or so it sounds to me. My mother-in-laws white eyed conure Lizzie passed away. We don't know all the information yet. She was only ten years old... and almost to her birthday.

But what I am trying to figure out is how to tell my Hahn's Jag, that his best friend has died. They spend a few days together every month (sometimes even a week or two). We were planning on them being together for a few weeks again, in about a month.

They were very close. We actually live an hour apart so they would go and play, groom and sing together. And do sleep overs and everything.

How do I tell her, that her best friend has died?

We will all be made smaller by her loss.

I would be up front with him about it, it hurts the more your milk around the bush so do it quickly like pulling a fresh bandaid off and let the shock of the news go through so it numbs the pain of loss a little. Then, I would cuddle for several hours with lots of treat giving and soft spoken-ness, perhaps a parrot movie night is in order to help her and yourself get over the loss. When we lose loved ones, the family always pulls in closer to fill the gap so that the loss though by no means lessened in depth, is lessened in the pain it caused.

I'm sorry you lost her. Just spend as much time with the Hahns as possible so she feels loved. Give her some toys to distract her.

Thanks everyone.

We took her to see my in-laws and the empty cage:(

She did ok, but we spent a good amount of time with her, and left her next to the cage for about an hour.

I think she will be ok. We do now however need to find her a new friend to play with:(

That was a good idea showing her the empty cage. Maybe she won't continue to look for the Hahn's and will move on.
