All parrots in NJ require permits except budgies and cockatiels. You will have problems in NJ if you have a Quaker, Patagonian Conure or Ringneck they are not allowed. Supposedly a special permit is available but to be frank in 20 years of knowing many NJ birders I don't know of anyone ever granted a permit. In fact a very well respected member of the bird community and employee of a well known store had a bird confiscated. Make arrangements to give the bird back and get out of the deal if the bird is one of the 3 I just listed.

It's not it's not! It's just a Sun Conure I am looking into contacting the NJ wild life people about him. He is originally from here as is tagged and registered under the old owners name and I had no clue until I was browsing around today to try and find him a girlfriend. I guess I'll take him back to NY with me this weekend and contact the NJ people from there to prevent them from taking him from me. I know it's like a 20$ fee and the site said something about every time a bird changes ownership I have to give them 20$. But when I bought him, I lived in NY and took him from NJ to NY now I moved to NJ but I am a resident of both states now I think. It's very confusing. I'll call the gaming department tomorrow and see if I can just wire them 20$ and have them mail me the paperwork because the last thing I'm going to let happen is for anyone to take my little Trekkie from me.

You can only be a resident of one state legally like, for drivers license and insurance for example.
Tell them you are a NY resident and going to attend college in NJ. And what are the rules for "residents" of NJ versus NY residents living temp in nj and are there differences in case you change it. If your license is in NY. If you are formally moving to NJ and changing your license over and insurance and formally not living at your parents anymore, then yes you'll be a NJ resident. Either way just ask but they'll want to know what I just asked, Im sure. If you're living on campus you most likely cannot be a resident using that addy. |

I use both addresses, my permenent address is registered in NY along with all my insurances, my plates, my lisence it's all in NY but I was never told to register my bird in NY so I'd have to do some looking at that. I'm not living on campus. I am still looking into if I have to switch my lisence over to this state or not. Hell I haven't even gotten my EZ pass yet or a Job over here I'm still looking and getting into this it's all new ;_; The gal who owns the house told me I should just call the Bureau in the area tomorrow and see about just sending them 20$ they won't hassle me apparently because she knows the people. I'm still in panic mode if anything happened to Jean I think I'd go crazy!

Yes call, but you need to know the rules. Probably yes, you need a permit even if it's temporary residence, I'd guess....
I was just thinking of my son at college. Our insurance would not cover out of state accidents. A big rip off. Luckily I found out and changed companies. Switching license is up to you if you maintain a res at home in NY. IMO what will decide the answer is the insurance coverage. It's state by state everything changes including rates. |

It's definately news to me that you need a permit to have certain birds in NJ. Could someone explain to me the process by which a bird would be confiscated from someone living there. What I mean is....do the police get an anonymous tip and then show up to kick your door in, or, do you get a first warning or a fine or something. What I'm saying is do they at least give you a reasonable chance to get a permit. If you truly didn't know a permit was required do they give you the benefit of the doubt?

I believe they can from reading the article, I am TOTALLY not pleased to see in there they can take my bird and euthinize it for not having papers but that's my take on it. I only found out because I was going to see if I could get on an adoption list to get a girlfriend for Jean to curve his sexual needs without sacrificing my hair

nj birds
Hi there. I lived in NJ with my birds for years. The permit is more of a technicality. They never checked up on things. On the initial permit they ask a number of questions such as describing the caging, feeding and vet care. You will also need to supply proof that the bird is captive born, such as the band number. After that, they just send you a yearly form asking if there are any changes. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
